What to Expect @ Dusk Lounge Bar

By Daniel Pillar

Electropop Fridays at Dusk - Joondalup and a good time go together!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I decided to review a club in Joondalup - I was warned by some about a lack of security, and I had heard many rumours about single mums trying to steal the scene. However, I saw an ad about the Dusk Fridays so I thought I'd give it a shot, and, contrary to popular belief, not only were neither of the above warnings necessary, but it's clear at least one club up north seems to know how to get it right, with a good atmosphere that I really enjoyed.

Though there wasn't too much of a line when I showed up at eleven, there definitely was one later on in the night when I left, so I'd recommend not showing up too late. Luckily though, the club wasn't crowded at full capacity, which is great because there's nothing I hate more than a sweaty corridor full of dudes. The club consists of a front room with a DJ, and a backroom where a band plays later on in the night. The back room was open earlier when I showed up, which might have dispersed the crowd a little too much to create a big atmosphere early, but once the club filled up the dance floors were jumping indeed. Earlier, the music was mainly top 40, r&b; and ministry, so most of the songs were very danceable. At around half twelve, when the very loud band "Redstar" started, the back room seemed to fill up with guys as the modern and classic rock started to blast, but the dancing in the front room continued to the electropop mix (which maintained a much better girl to guy ratio).

The crowd was possibly the only unappealing thing to me. Early on, most of the guys seemed to be mid-to-late twenties, accompanied by a few younger and older girls of 'lower calibre', which surprised me as I expected there to be a bigger student population with a cheap $5($10 late) entry fee, $8 spirits and $10 Jagerbombs. However, as the night continued on, a younger crowd did come through and by the time I left they seemed to dominate the d-floors, and the others seemed to wander to the outside smoking room at the back. If you check it out, I'd suggest taking a medium to large group of friends to dance with, and then the rest of the crowd shouldn't affect your night at all.

The club itself has lots of screens around it, displaying music videos and slideshows. This creates a cool effect, but it does counter the many effects lights they had around the place which would be much more psychedelic in a darker atmosphere. Altogether, it creates a good setting without being dingy, unlike the Paramount upstairs (where it's too dark to know which bogan near you copped that feel.) And if you're not the dancing type, there's coin operated massage chairs to vibrate away your worries.

In conclusion, I think Dusk makes for a very enjoyable night out, but this probably hinged on the fact I was there with friends, so I'd suggest you take some along with you too. I'd definitely go back - all I'd had was caffeine, and I had a great time - and I'm sure that a drinking or not, you'll have a pretty good night too.
