One of Perth's hottest live venues. Boasting a fantastic sound and lights show as well as some of the best local and interstate talent. Black Bettys has a pub meets club kind of atmosphere and is a destination point for many musicians as well as lovers of live bands and current music.

What to Expect @ Black Betty''

By Delysha Pick

If you like all things heavy metal and rock 'n' roll, Black Bettys would by far be your venue of choice when looking for a place to hang out in Perth on a Saturday night. Situated on Aberdeen Street in Northbridge, if you're in the mix of black clothing, tattoos and heavy piercings, you've found yourself in the right place.

Black Bettys is quite an older venue and - placed on the corner - gets quite a busy crowd whether it be on a Friday or Saturday night. The vast array of youngsters displaying, in show and tell fashion, what they had eaten earlier that day on the sidewalk as you walk in was a concerning indication of what was to come. The decor is similar to the Clink nightclub with a feeling of being trapped (by choice, of course) in an old jail cell with high stone walls and metal fencing. On a positive note, and a surprising one too, the two long wooden bars are as impressive as I've seen for a while, giving a touch of the old English style bars so loved from the years gone by.

The atmosphere is definitely a heavy grunge feel. Black matrix long coats and heavily tinted aviatars may earn you an awkward second look walking down Murray Street in Perth's CBD, but this getup is the bare minimum norm here. I was dressed as hardcore as I dared with slit jeans and black singlet top, however I still felt severely under dressed. Most of the gold chains that decorate the guys' necks here make 50 Cent look like an amateur. The atmosphere, although catering to a very succinct group, was impressive. The live band pumped the crowd on Fridays, and the DJ mix on Saturdays is apparently as good.

The age group is an older crowd consisting of mainly 25+. There are a few teeny boppers in the mix bundled in with a few 45 year old bling loving, belly showing cougars. Drinks are the standard pricing and range between $8 and $14. RTD prices were quite high ranging from $12 to $14.

Tequila shots are a big hit here, with every second person lining up at least four on the bar - and that was just for their selves! My vodka lime water was not looked upon favorably by the bartenders with earnings comprising more space on their facial region than I ever thought possible. If you're not drinking rum and cola, beam and cola or any alcoholic whisky or rum mixed with cola in a can, this probably wouldn't be you're venue of choice.

Overall Black Bettys is a rocking little venue, however the downside is a significantly rough crowd. You definitely need to hold your own in this venue. I'd give Black Bettys 5 tips out of 10.
