The nightclub scene in Canberra has been dwindling since the closure of 3 of its most iconic venues - North Bar, Meche Nightclub and ICBM in 2014. The trio of nightclubs were favorites amongst Canberra partiers for their spacious dance floors, all genres playing music and vibrant atmosphere. Unfortunately, now that the Northbourne Avenue strip has been left vacant, many have been left wondering where to go to dance. So here is a reminder of the 4 best nightclubs in Canberra and a few places you can get away dancing at.
1. Uni Pub
Uni Pub boast 4 levels of entertainment to cater to whatever mood your in. For those looking to dance, Elevated Nightclub located on level 4 is where you’ll hear your favourite Commercial Dance mixes, Top 40 remixes, RNB & Electro playing every Thursday, Friday & Saturday night. Elevated Nightclub offers glittering décor, a large dance space and panoramic views of Canberra. Unfortunately, of late Uni Pub can be a hit and miss with the nightclub often remaining empty…
2. Cube
Cube is Canberra’s premier gay and lesbian nightclub featuring regular drag shows, guest DJs and event nights. Mirror balls and mirror posts allow you to watch yourself go nuts to the Dance music on offer at Cube. Though the venue is small and cover charges come into effect after 10pm, you do have the option of making a fool of yourself on dancing poles on center stage!
3. Academy Club
For the genuine club experience, Academy Club is a must! Upstairs at Candy Bar you have the opportunity to enjoy views of the main club floor whilst enjoying a intimate cocktail bar vibe. The dance floor below offers a large dancing space, full size cinema screen, extensive lighting, an impressive sound system and a bar at the back. Academy showcases a mixture of the best local, national and international bands and DJ. With previous acts include: Naughty By Nature, Flo Rida, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, Porter Robinson, Disclosure, Duke Dumont, Bag Raiders, Chuckie and so many more!
4. Mooseheads Pub and Nightclub
Another venue that is all about the levels is Mooseheads Pub and Nightclub, with a total of 4 levels on 2 of which you can dance. The Nightclub located on level 3 has a medium size elevated dance floor, standard décor and a mix of Dance R&B and Chart sounds playing. The dance floor is never empty and the crowd and atmosphere is always fun. But downstairs at the Pub is where it always seems to be happening. And though the Pub has no technical “dance floor” once the DJ starts playing everyone’s favorite ’90s, Noughties and latest hits everyone seems to just dance.
The final three on my list aren’t nightclubs but bar hybrids that offer a bar atmosphere with a DJ and small dance floors for those still out after 11pm. Tongue and Groove, Hopscotch and Treehouse offer you alternatives to the party scene. And while I am a fan of these venues for a drink and maybe a quick dance, they are definitely not the places you’ll end up if your looking to dance.
