In my opinion, Australia Day is almost better than Christmas Day. Practically the entire country celebrates this beautiful land in unison…plus it’s another excuse to get ridiculously drunk, and have a ridiculously crazy Aussie Day party. But before you start sending Facey invites, here’s a few tips to help get you through the day and night—because Christ knows if it’s an Australia Day party, it’s going to get pretty wild.
1. Have (Backup) Beers
So, I realise not everybody is a beer drinker… but on Australia Day, you better have a VB in hand at some point, otherwise you’re probably not Australian. But in all seriousness, whether you’re a beer drinker or not, by the end of the night all the alcohol will have been drunk, and all the bottleos will be closed. Long story short—you’ll be an Aussie Day hero if you have a backup XXXX carton stashed away.
2. Have A Pool
Again, not everybody enjoys having a dip…but Australia Day is a day for the outdoors—BBQs, cricket, goon of fortune. But to keep cool during the day, you should have some form of water activity—a pool, a sprinkler, water balloons. Not only will they cool you down, but you’ll also end up creating a new Australia Day ritual.
3. Be Careful Who You Let Inside
With water activities, comes mud. Plus, we’re Australian; we can get dirty doing practically anything. Your guests will be sloppy, muddy and drunken (and if they’re not, you’re doing Aussie Day wrong). If you let your crew into the house, shit is going to get messy—quick. Of course, you can’t stop people walking through the house, but try to control the mud and/or water trail they’ll be leaving behind them by supplying a few towels. I can promise you’ll thank me in the morning.
4. Play Triple J’s Hottest 100
Australia Day is the only day I can think of where practically the whole nation comes together as one to celebrate two damn good things about our country—Australia’s birthday and Australia’s music. So, if you’re not listening to Triple J’s Hottest 100 Countdown at your Australia Day party, it isn’t an Australia Day party.
5. Be Proud… And Show It
However you decide to spend your Australia Day, you should be proud. And display that pride on your sleeve; douse yourself in green and gold, or red and blue (and when I say douse, I mean DOUSE), cheers each other and smack cans together, yell ‘AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE’ at bypassing cars and yell ‘HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY’ at least 16 times an hour. Whatever you’re doing, be proud—because we live in one damn luscious, beautiful, scorching, plentiful, kind and giving country.
