As they say, a rainy day often dampens the mood. This is particularly an issue when it comes to being ‘psyched’ to go out. As fate always seems to have it, weekends tend to be especially wet and cold. When a sunny-but-cool winter Friday-day turns grey and the rain starts dropping, so do our enthusiasm levels. You probably don’t want to waste your weekend, so how do you overcome the horrible weather and keep psyched when it’s raining? Furthermore, how do you keep your mates psyched?
Tell Yourself That Going Out IS A Rainy Day Activity:
People always say that the cinema is a rainy day activity. It’s a dark room, filled with random people, with a good audio system, visual effects. That sounds familiar? Hell, you can even get free popcorn at bars these days! The only real difference is instead of all sitting down, you are up and probably dancing. Dancing, a form of cardio exercise, which is sure to warm you up!
Also, remember that going out is better than staying home on a rainy day, because chances are you’ll come home with someone to warm your bed. That’s much better than staying in and sleeping with socks on.
Meet Up And Commute Together:
People don’t like to do things alone. Specifically, they don’t like to suffer through an ordeal like trekking in the rain alone. If you plan to all meet somewhere warm together where you can pre-drink and then commute together, people are more likely to come out.
Dress appropriately:
Dress warm, but not heavy. If you wear too much wool/cotton thick clothing then if it gets wet, it won’t dry. Think light but warm. Polyester blends dry quicker. Don’t wear canvas shoes. The best protection from the cold is a ‘beer jacket’* so make sure you have one on before you go out. (*an expression to describe the sensation of not feeling cold when drinking alcoholic beverages, such as beer).
Girls, think ‘messy’ hairdos. That way if you’re prone to frizziness caused by moisture it will just look intentional.
Take Along A Crappy Umbrella:
They can be pretty cheap these days. Get one for a few dollars from the supermarket and chuck it anytime during the night when you no longer want to carry it.
Choose Places Near A Station:
When thinking about a place you want to go out to, choose a place which is near a station. You don’t really want to do the walk across Hyde Park from Town Hall station to Oxford Street in the rain. King’s Cross or Newtown by train would be more sheltered, for example. Then just pick a bar close to the station.
Choose Warm Indoor/Covered Place:
I love beer gardens as much as the next person, but they are impractical on a rainy night. Outdoor heaters don’t work all that well. Try for dive bars, underground small bars, no-windows-no-escape type nightclubs, The Star or big mahogany pubs with fireplaces and carpeted walls.
