As one of those people who pretty much loves all kinds of music (seriously, you can take me anywhere – bagpipe concert? I’m in!), one of my pet hates is music snobs. You know, those people that can’t have fun unless they are amongst their own crowd, listening to their own type of music.
I’m a firm believer that you can have fun anywhere as long as you have the right attitude. So when I’m out and about, I don’t mind whether the latest music is spinning on the decks or retro music has brought disco back. However, when it comes to the question of current music versus retro music, I must shamefully admit I have a soft spot for old school tunes even if they are a bit daggy. Here’s why:
- First things first, retro music usually involves a disco ball, flared pants and/or big hair. What’s not to love? Also, depending on your age, “retro” can mean music from anywhere between the 1990s and earlier, which means there are more songs to love.
- Sure you gotta love new music, especially if you’re a hardcore clubber (where new electro, house and trance are the name of the game), but it’s fun to break out the old cassettes every now and then. When a new song has just come out, you get excited to hear it and want to listen to it on repeat. But this feeling only lasts until the song inevitably gets overplayed and you get soooo over it! This doesn’t happen with the classics. When that great old song comes on that you haven’t heard since before you started shaving, you can’t resist but scream, “OMG I haven’t heard this song in agesssss!” After which you proceed to sing along to every single line of the song. Tell me you don’t love doing this? Really, we don’t fully appreciate songs until they become “golden oldies” or “one-hit-wonders”.
- Old songs are great for reminiscing. There will always be certain songs that take you back to a certain moment in your life and allow you to relive it. What song was huge when you first started going out? What was playing when you first kissed a boy? How many people listen to Vitamin C’s ‘Graduation’ hit and get transported right back to high school? Such is the power of retro music!
- Retro music videos are way funnier than modern video clips. It’s a favourite past time of mine to sit around watching Music Max retro music specials with a bottle of wine. And anyway, I’m over all the tits, arse and expensive cars on MTV these days. I can’t tell my Flo Rida from my Pit Bull anymore! I guess they just don’t make em like they used to.
Ok so now that I’ve revealed myself to be a bit of a nana, I’m going to go and listen to a vintage record while I make a pot of tea.
