Love & Dysfunction brings fine drinking without the pretence to Melbourne’s bayside precinct and serves vintage cocktails with a twist in a laid back environment flooded with electro swing and 1920s vibes. The entire front bar draws on its quintessential St Kilda vintage, with retro phones and cut glass decanters complementing ornate led lit windows and the building’s early 20th Century heritage. Work your way through this dimly lit, prohibition-style bar to find relaxed chesterfield couches against an Art Deco inspired mural.

What To Expect @ Love & Dysfunction

Written by Indah Da Silva

To find Love & Dysfunction, just look for a warm, orange lantern adorning the side of the building on Grey Street, St Kilda. It sets the mood for what’s to come when you walk into the cozy front bar, doused in low-light, you feel as if you’re walking back in time to the roaring ’20s. There’s smooth Spanish jazz music coming from the speakers and there’s a warm atmosphere of welcome that is only enhanced by the friendly staff members.

There is a comfortable retro theme which carries through to even the smallest details, from the ornate crystal ashtrays to the beautiful decanters sitting just behind the bar. The menus are bound old timey book covers, featuring a variety of eclectic and obscure titles, it’s both environmentally friendly, and super charming.

As you move through the bar to the lounging area, you become fully enveloped by the atmosphere, fit with red leather armchairs like something out of a cigar lounge, you then move outside into the beer garden, where you’ll find the perfect summer hangout. The courtyard is cozy and intimate, it is the perfect place to hang out with a group of friends on a Sunday afternoon. The crowd is very mixed, catering to a variety of demographics and age groups. Anyone who likes crafty cocktails served in vintage glasses (and who doesn’t?) and a variety of tasty, shared food platters should definitely come and experience Love & Dysfunction.

The drink prices are reasonable, cocktails are anywhere between $18-$20, a glass of wine hovers around $9, same as beer and cider. The shared food platters all sound creative and delicious, and if the quality of the Croquettes reflect the rest of the menu, I would have ordered one of everything. A shared plate ranges from $10-$25, and rest assured you get what you pay for. There is even the option to order an entire cheese board, so fear not wine lovers of Melbourne.

The bar and kitchen has an unofficial close of 11pm, but by all means, take your time getting yourself home; drinking a good cocktail is like a work of art, you can’t rush it. The staff are very accommodating and even go the extra mile, calling a cab for a group of friends next to us and politely asked the driver if he could wait while everyone gathered their things.

That is the special touch of Love & Dysfunction, you feel as if you’re sitting at a friend’s place instead of at a bar in the inner city. If you’re looking to have a few drinks away from the usual ruckus of Melbourne bars, this should definitely be on your list. One visit here and you’ll definitely want to come back for more.
