Indecent Fridays at The Key Club Review

Review by Catherine Falalis

It seems one of Melbourne’s newest nightclubs has hit its peak too early, marking a mediocre clubbing experience at Indecent Fridays at The Key Club, located on Lonsdale Street.

Upon arrival at 11pm, it’s hard to believe that this club is only 3 weeks into its opening. Don’t get me wrong, the music itself and venue were fine, but the place was a little too dead for most peoples liking.

The venue is very easy to miss as there is no sign outside to indicate its presence. To make matters even more confusing, the sign of the club previously located at this venue is yet to be taken down. Don’t worry guys; you haven’t been waiting in line all that time to get into ‘The Loft,’ chances are you’re in the right place.

But where the club lacks in patrons and atmosphere, it makes up for in the music it provides. It caters to the music styles of both house and RnB – throw in with a couple of freestyle rappers and bongo drums and you certainly have a different clubbing experience at your disposal. Different, but it works.

There are two rooms for your dancing pleasure which are connected by one bar.

The RnB room is abundant in wooden vased planter boxes, the green foliage offering a nice contrast against the black and gold colour scheme the venue has going. Black cushioned booths along the walls offer seating, along with golden egg shaped chairs which look like thrones – definitely an interesting touch. Gold curtains drape the surroundings and separate the two rooms, while the mirrored walls are useful for a quick check of the hair and make up.

The second room is decked out with black walls and contrasting white rectangular skirting boards. Low hanging black and gold lights above the bar continue the colour scheme of the previous room. This room also has two VIP daybeds (pillows provided), but that is unfortunately the only seating available for the area.

Now let’s talk drink prices.

$15 for a shot of Jager?

Don’t worry, my jaw dropped as well – just a little too pricey given that the venue attracts and under 25’s crowd with limited cash inflow.

Not to mention, entry will set you back around $15 on a guest list, or $20 without.

Guys should note that it is a dressy club with most in shirts and a nice pair of jeans. I did however spot a few guys in t-shirts but runners are definitely a no-go at this venue. Ladies can just throw on a nice dress and heels and they’re set to go.

If expensive drinks and a far from enthusiastic atmosphere do it for you, then this is the place to go. But let’s be honest - the pros don’t really outweigh the cons.
