What To Expect @ The Apartment

Review by Matilda Mornane

The Apartment has been aptly named. Sitting inconspicuously down Little Bourke Street, the venue is at once a warm, inviting and open space, with walls separating the various ‘rooms’ it consists of, all facing into the large dance floor and bar area.

Although it may look a bit confused, when entering The Apartment, one is greeted by zero dollars entry – always a plus in my book – and a staircase giving you the immediate impression of an upbeat, preppy atmosphere.

The lighting is classically dark (because who wants to see that strangers face when he or she buys you a drink?), and the décor is a mix up of everything from restaurant-style tables on an indoor balcony of sorts, to comfy chairs and couches in each area.

I catch myself picturing a birthday party or work function being held in the semi-underground bar – of which it has two. Though only one bar is being utilised, and a DJ sits at the far end of the other, everyone is served quickly, and with a smile from the friendly staff.

The drinks aren’t cheap – $8.50 for a Vodka Cranberry, which is basically average pricing in upper-class Melbourne City bars – but the atmosphere is fun, and I struggle to find one person who doesn’t look like they’re having a fantastic time.

The average age group present on a Saturday night seems to be mid-to-late twenties, and the music is a veritable feast of old school ballads (think Dirty Dancing ‘I’ve Had The Time of My Life’) being melted into newer tracks that everyone clearly knows all the words to (Duck Sauce’s ‘Barbara Streisand’, anyone?).

Though the various styles in the same place may at first appear strange, The Apartment, just like going to a friend’s house for a few drinks, welcomes its patrons immediately and, on a Saturday, it absolutely buzzes with the promise of a good night out.
