Fad Gallery Review

Review by Kate Reynolds

Imagine if you had a wealthy friend who filled the walls of their swanky apartment with quirky pieces of art, replaced all the light fittings with red lamps and candles, threw a disco ball on the ceiling and turned the spare bedroom into a bar. Well now you don’t have to imagine; Fad Gallery is said wealthy friend, and their door is open to you.

‘Fun, Art and Drinks’ sums up FAD Gallery in three words. Nestled down Corrs lane, the bar is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Chinatown. Upon entering, you are greeted with dim red lighting and walls adorned with artworks of the feature artist for the month. From pop-art to photography, you can admire the pieces as you sip red wine and make poignant comments, pondering whether the Andy Warhol-style Mickey Mouse portrait would be better suited above the piano in your dining room or that blank space in the hallway.

The bar itself is reasonably priced, with a dozen or so beers on offer. House wine and basic spirits will set you back around $7, top shelf spirits $8 and shots are available from $9. The majority of would-be art purchasers seem to be aged 30+; Fad gallery definitely attracts an older crowd than its neighbour nightclub Eurotrash, however younger partygoers are frequently spotted too.

If one floor of arty goodness isn’t enough for you, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn that Fad Gallery continues upstairs; a slightly hidden staircase leads the way to another gallery where you can browse more art in a quieter environment. The artworks are rotated roughly every three weeks, showcasing different artists and forms, both upstairs and down.

When there isn’t a band set up on the floor in amongst the mismatched upholstered couches, non-intrusive music serves as light background noise in between clinking glasses and animated conversation. Fad Gallery is host to a variety of live entertainment, including music and comedy.

If you’re keen to embrace your cultured side in an intimate environment, sipping on wine and discussing the likes of Van Gogh and Picasso while enjoying the work of local artists, then Fad Gallery is the destination for you. Whether you’re after candlelit conversation, a place to enjoy an after-work beverage or just an escape from the hum-drum of city life, you’ll be surely grateful you wandered your way down the alley off Little Bourke and made friends with Fad Gallery.
