There are two ways, of course, that you can approach the matter. How to remain sober, and what to avoid with the following morning in mind.
1. Don’t Drink
Is a strategy regularly offered up by teetotalers. However, it is unhelpful as people who don’t imbibe very rarely ask the question.
2. Eating
Eating has much to be said for it. Very few people attempt to eat and drink simultaneously. Food retards the absorption of alcohol, while also slowing your drinking rate. The reason for this is because your appetite is being satisfied. An empty stomach is an Achilles heel, it will increase the amount that you drink and the overall effect it has on your body. What kinds of food? Oily and fatty foods are the way to go as they soak up alcohol much quicker. There is a reason that McDonald’s now offers 24 hour service. However, do bear in mind that deep fried onion rings and Big Macs don’t always collaborate in a digestive system that has recently withstood a torrent of vodka. You may find yourself ejecting it all into a toilet bowl, or even worse, on to the sidewalk.
3. Diluting Your Drink
This is another tried and true method, known to all but the most naive of boozers. One of the best advantages of distilling, especially with scotch, is that it keeps one hydrated throughout the night. However, dilution is only a short term project and drunkenness will soon get you in the end. Like many other things, this strategy can have the opposite of the intended effect. Distillation can allow you to drink more, quicker. If you decide to take your drink neat and without ice, you are far less likely to consume it at the same rate than you would if it was mixed with water, or even worse, a soft drink. When is the last time you saw somebody down a double tumbler of scotch within 60 seconds? I thought so.
4. Being Fat And Being Tall
Although you probably can’t compensate for height, if you are committed you can pack on the pounds and make sure that there is more room for the alcohol to spread about. The effectiveness of this is suspect however, and may be accompanied by further health problems.
5. Not Being Depressed
This should go without saying, but alcohol is definitely not a solvent for any emotional issues you may be having. Although some people describe feelings of happiness and relaxation when they take a drink after a hard day, what they are actually experiencing is the illusion of happiness and relaxation. You may dance and laugh for a few hours, but the unconsciousness always gets what it wants. Those negative emotions will soon rupture out of the fissures of your alcohol soaked personality, with disastrous results. Emotional and unhappy drunks are no fun to be around, and, if you’re of the fairer sex, it can make you a quick target for sexual deviants and emotional manipulators who are only interested in getting one thing from you.
