The Brisbane Hotel is an institution in Hobart pub life and if walls could talk than this place would have a lot to tell you about this good ol’ towns history. These days, the Brisbane still keeps pouring them, although with its support of alternative music, fringe art and all things experimental and grunge, the Brisbane is probably catering to a different local market than it used to. The Brisbane is open for lunch and dinner most days of the week and live performance is a regular feature. A cover charge may apply on some evenings.

What to Expect @ The Brisbane Hotel

By Renata Sain

The Brisbane Hotel is Hobart’s home of alternative music, fringe art and all things experimental and grunge. A great supporter of local music and the arts, the Brisbane is a good place to meet Hobart’s outer dwellers and enjoy a grass-roots, local atmosphere.

Sometimes a little seedy and at other times culturally refreshing, the Brisbane is an institution for Hobart’s non-mainstream community seeking a platform to listen to visiting and local artists and just have a casual night out far away from the mainstream of regular Hobart nightlife. The Brisbane is home to two main bars, and during peak times one bar is usually dedicated to live performance music across the genres of punk, rock, metal, world and experimental sound, with the other bar housing local and visiting DJ’s playing an assortment of alternative electronica, house, infusion and grunge.

Art exhibitions by local artists are sometimes on display in the main bar and the Brisbane also runs the occasional underage gig during the day on weekends for local kids to thrash to in a controlled, pub environment.

Pool tables and a foosball table are also on offer in the main bar, and bar stools, a few lounges, tables and chairs are scattered about the venue, so you can disappear amongst it if you want to especially late at night when the venue can take on a dark, grunge clubbers dimension. Out the back you’ll find a simple urban themed beer garden, but you need to go looking for it to find it and it may not always be open.

No night is the same at this venue and the program is definitely mixed to cater for the many different needs of The Brisbane’s regular punters so have a look to see what’s playing and by all means check this place out if experimental and alternatives sounds and characters are your thing.

Drinks are well priced with tap beer ranging from between $3.70 to $4.20, spirits from $6.50 to $14 and wine from $3.50 to $7. A wholesome and affordable pub menu is available for lunch and dinner with prices ranging from $5 to $17. Vegan options are available.

The Brisbane is opened from Tuesday to Friday from midday to late, on Saturday’s from 3pm to 4am and on Sunday’s from 4pm to around 9pm. By regulations, there is no entry into Hobart clubs and bars after 3am unless you have already been in the venue on the same night.

The Brisbane Hotel is around a 15-20 minute walk north east of Hobart’s CBD area.

A cover charge may apply on some nights to enter the live performance bar.
