False modesty will get you nowhere fast and Geisha is unashamedly elitist, revered as “the” destination on the sunny side of midnight, celebrating all that is grandiose & decadent about club land, everyone who ascends into Geisha is a fabulous “somebody” par excellence. No Cougar Bourbon here, just an edgy cat walk of designer teez, feline finery, op shop ensembles and nifty fringes.

What to Expect @ Geisha Bar

By Clare Watson

For your $15 entry fee, you will be transported to a sultry, late-night hideaway, a space inspired by the Geisha Girls of the Far East located on the fringe of Northbridge. With enough room to dance, two bars and plenty of space for more intimate experiences, Geisha Bar will definitely get your heart rate up on a Saturday night.

Although Geisha Bar openly advertises itself as a ‘gay-friendly’ venue, there is none of the glitter or shirtless dancers that you will find at the other, more flamboyant gay clubs in the area. Instead, you will find a modest space that has been decked out with chic and modern Japanese-style pop art. Geisha attracts a stylish, more experienced crowd and isn’t really the place for first-timers looking for a wild night.

I found that the drink prices were reasonable enough, especially since there is an entry fee at the door. Vodka based drinks were around $8 and the increasingly popular skittle bombs were $12. However, I found some of the girls working behind the bar were extremely rude and unwilling to co-operate with customers trying to order, which is unusual in comparison to the amount of friendly nightclub staff members you will encounter in Northbridge on the weekend.

Definitely for the night owl, Geisha doesn’t open until 11pm and doesn’t really kick off until after 1am. You will not hear any of this week’s top forty at Geisha Bar, but more of an underground beat and techno fusion guaranteed to keep you on your feet. Be aware, however, that it is a pretty specific genre being mixed and if you don’t like the first five minutes you hear, you’re probably not going to like any of it.

Geisha Bar is wonderfully elegant niche for private happenings and intimate encounters. With plush couches, booths and alcoves hidden around every corner, you get the feeling that anything can happen here. My advice would be dress neat and bring an open mind, and Geisha Bar will take care of the rest.
