On the Gold Coast, Schoolies is a time of dread for the majority of locals. Let me paint a picture for you; hundreds of thousands of fresh 16-18 year old graduates flood Surfers Paradise with their pink lanyards, wristbands, and monstrous egos. Can I also mention that these kids find their way to the outer suburbs of the Gold Coast.
For many of us, our Leavers week was the first introduction that we had to nightlife, partying and heavy alcohol consumption. Some of us remember it with fondness, others less so. There are also those of us who can’t remember it at all. For the young and young at heart, Leavers is indeed a kind of religious pilgrimage and a right of initiation.
Another year, another lot of kids graduating high school, which means it’s bucks galore for Gold Coast nightclubs thanks to Schoolies. In fact, all of the Gold Coast’s businesses will be making a packet, and considering how much money Gold Coast businesses like its theme parks and resorts make thanks to the ridiculous amount of tourists that go there all year round, that’s saying something.
When we’re in high school, we can’t wait for the day we turn 18 so we can finally leave that hellhole and go clubbing every weekend. But after a decade of hard partying and drinking, there’s one particular party that will really grab your party veteran attention: your high school reunion. Circle of life stuff right here; you’ve gone back to school!
Two years ago today the 2010 graduating classes of every (well everyone who is anyone) Victorian high school was loosing their shit in costume to the anthem of Ke$ha and Swedish House Mafia.
