What To Expect At Ms Collins

Written by Caitlyn Leggett

If you’re feeling like glammin’ up for a girls night out complete with hip hop dancing to a bit of old school Kanye, then you must hit up Phat Fridays at Ms Collins.

Formerly Silk Road, the revamped space features modern decor, with a little girly grunge thrown in the mix. Neon is everywhere. Pink neon lights fly around the room, quirky neon signs grab your attention and neon bench tops light up your night at the bar as you wave down your bartender, complete with striped shirts and fake nerd glasses. Adorable!

Find spots of pop art pieces and graffiti in pink white and black at almost every turn all around the club. All to match the stylish black and hot pink furnishings that ooze sophisticated chic.

As you enter, look up and envy the DJ with the best view in the house, perching several metres above the main central bar that takes up half of the main room. A god in the sky, if you will, of the music blasting through the insane sound system.

But don’t think you’ll have to invest in a set of decks and start DJ lessons to witness the view, just take the stairs to the left and you’ll be looking down right behind him. With several bars upstairs as well as the two downstairs, you won’t be stuck in a never-ending line. But when you are at the bar, you’ll be constantly resisting the urge to leave as every new song comes on. Because all of them will have you and your friends screaming “I love this song!” Phat Fridays is the place to be if you’re an RnB lover like myself and don’t be surprised to find girls and guys dancing like they were in the newest Beyonce music video.

Being a university student, the crowd was a little different to what I’m used to. Think business men and woman who come for after work drinks and stay for the dancing, or beautiful girls in their mid 20s that have probably spent all week deciding what shoes will match that expensive new dress. This is definitely a place where you will need to dress to impress.

As you probably guessed, Ms Collins resides on Collins Street and whilst their most popular night may be Friday, Saturday nights will see big crowds. Or try something new on their Tromba Thursdays when it’s a night dedicated to Latin America.

Beer here starts at $9 for a scooner, wine from $11 or treat yourself to a delicious cocktail that will set you back $19. Spirits start at $11, but with Belvedere as the cheapest vodka in the house, it’s worth your money.

With international acts such as Mya (“Ghetto Superstar”) and Pia Mia (“Do It Again”) having visited in just the last two months alone and Melbourne personalities regularly visiting (I have seen many AFL players there), Ms Collins knows how to get a party started. And so it’s no surprise I have already returned since my first visit. And I think that says a lot in itself.
