Having already earned its fair share of chatter due to one of the city's most creative cocktail lists designed by an award winning bartender, The Galley Room is quintessentially Melbourne, tucked away between the ground floor and The Deck of the Waterside Hotel building. True to Melbourne form, finding this hidden gem is well worth the effort, being greeted by a venue designed for private chats and relaxed lounging , from the night grazing menu to the comfy Italian sofas, double sided fireplace and luxurious leather booths.. Patrons are rewarded with a cocktail list second to none, using some amazing products and only fresh, seasonal produce, as well as syrups and bitters, etc that are all hand made on site, served by bartenders and floor staff that are knowledgeable, experienced and love a chat. A world apart from other cocktail bars who think God is a bartender, our staff are more than happy to serve up a classic, or come up with a fresh new creation based on your favourite flavours.. To Complement the mind blowing cocktails, chef Darren McKinlay has designed a tapas menu full of delicacies from the Galley Kitchen using fresh quality produce, ensuring your every need is catered for. The Galley Room is open Thursday and Friday from 4pm - late, while its flagship Saturday night kicks off at 6pm and sees DJs including Andy K Dever, Tom Showtime and Agent 86 playing sophisticated soul, rare grooves and lost classics for all ends of the spectrum, from the discerning listener to the open-minded novice. At the Galley Room, the focus is not just the great drinks selection, tasty food or beautiful decor, but also making sure everyone has a great experience.

The Galley Room Review

Review By Sophie Lane

Melbourne's 'The Gallery Room' is as rare as it is hard to find - a small, young, gem sandwiched between the ground and first floor of its elder sibling The Deck. The cut is fine and the touch as cool as ice. What awaits patrons at the top of a glistening staircase is well worth the treasure hunt.

Black and silver sparkle wall to wall as a small designer symbol with nothing but the letters 'TGR' tells guests from near and far that they've reached their destination. The location of the venue ensures its patrons must arrive with purpose, there's no way a group of the drunk and disorderly could decipher the code. Exclusivity is intended.

A push through heavy doors and a warm open fire greets you. After hitting the high seas of Melbourne's swish buckling stormy weather, you've finally reached your haven.

While the interior may be intimate, a large stone marble bar harnessing two vest-wearing lads suggests a drink or two immediately. As if we've hit a high wave, gravity pulls feet towards the bar immediately. It's all a part of the magic.

As suit wearing business men and women of Melbourne's CBD approach the bar, each and every overworked smile is greeted by one of the two approachable bar staff.

There's no waving of notes, no cleaving castaways and no tricks of the trade in order to get that next hit of alcohol that little bit faster. It's all about fine service here. Each patron is served in due time, jazz melodies sooth waiting times and I'm surprised to find that even the most intoxicated of guests don't mind the wait.

The staff take their time in preparing each drink as if it were your last. A pile of leather bound menus are displayed at the counter, giving guests the choice to order at the bar, or let their feet lead them to one of the comforting lounges dimly lit by old world candles and rounded mirrors.

An array of nautical themed cocktails are yours for the taking, but with an average price of $18 there's a high chance only one or two will hit your palate per visit. Names such as The Legendary Clain, Hot Buttered Rum, A Gentlemen Never Tells, and Mutiny on the Bounty send anticipatory giggles through each and every booth.

But don't let the fun, youthful, sailor inspired names send your expectations astray - ingredients like egg white scream Master Chef and beyond. After ordering a cocktail off the menu with more than four exotic ingredients I dare not pronounce, a part of my not so sober self expects George Colombaris to appear serving the next drink, whilst slipping in the word 'sexy'.

'Up Periscope' provides a fruity palate of citrus infused flavours, whilst still managing to burn the back of your throat with a hard hit of alcohol. 'Milk Punch' can be served warm or chilled, and the buttered rum inspired cocktail description tells patrons to leave their diets at home. Cheeky, honest words evoke excitement amongst the crowd, and although the cocktail prices are a little steep, quality ensues.

If cocktails are not your poison of choice, then let the wide range of internationally brewed beers quench your thirst. From Japan to Germany, Sri Lanka to Sweden, the lads at The Gallery Room are a well-travelled bunch.

The Galley Room provides the perfect night 'in' for those with a disposable income. Sophisticated with a twist of fun, the venue is a must for the 25-35 year old age range.

Call the Captain, I've found your fortune.
