Castle Hill Tavern Review

Review By Maree Sorbello

Once the preferred Friday night hang out of local youngsters, Castle Hill RSL has recently moved to market itself to a much more mature crowd. The removal of its upstairs nightclub section has seen the moving-on of ‘riff-raff,’ leaving behind a civilised, relaxed atmosphere for those wishing to have some dinner, a drink and even have a gamble.

Featuring three main bars, the RSL caters to everyone from 18 to 80 – and even younger if you get in early for a family lunch or dinner (or older if you’re still partying). The Terrace bar’s well lit space and stylish decor features live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights and its common to hear plenty of those old school songs that everyone loves to sing along to. There’s even an outdoor area which is lovely to sit out in on those hot summer nights and afternoons.

Walking a short distance from the Terrace bar, you’ll find the men’s corner – The TAB and Sports Bar. Here there are TVs everywhere, as well as pool tables and plenty of space to sit with a drink. There are even a few booths to sit with your mates, with a TV each inside of course. For events like Melbourne cup, the club is packed, and this is where the action is.

Moving on upstairs is the cocktail lounge featuring the most comfortable of couches amongst an art deco notion throughout the entire floor. Here is where the cocktails are served and also with free entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights, this is the place to kick up your heels and have a dance. What I love most about this bar is the combination of youngsters, oldsters and everyone in between, dancing the night away.

Each of the bars features usual club prices. And for those lucky enough to drive, you can find consolation in the club’s offer of free soft drinks for designated drivers.

If you’re not a fan of the Friday and Saturday night scene, never fear. There’s also a cafe and restaurant featuring everything from pasta bake to ribs and salad to gelato. There’s an indoor and outdoor area open every day of the week and it’s common to see families here for dinner on the weekends or girlfriends out for lunch and drinks during the week.

Last but not least, I can’t forget the clubs casino space. With what must be a couple of hundred pokies (and smokies), as well as a bit of blackjack and roulette, it’s another space those mischievous men of ours like to head to, as well as all those lucky ladies.

All up, Castle Hill RSL is great for locals of all ages. Not the place to expect a huge night on the drinks, but rather a classy, casual hang out, for food and drinks of a reasonable price any day of the week. And for the weekends, there’s enough there to keep you and your friends entertained all night.
