Review by Christa SinghIf you’re looking for a place to enjoy some quiet drinks before gearing up for a night out on the town, then the Black Bear Lodge is the place for you. Located in Brunswick St above the Cosmopolitan Café, situated in the buzz of Friday and Saturday nights in the Valley, you’ll have to do a double take to realise this little bar hiding up some dark stairs and in amongst fellow indie revellers and acoustic music.
Named after the owner’s natural heritage of Canada, this bar is anything but grizzly, with its natural wood floors and numerous candle lights displayed around the dimly lit venue along with vintage style lamps. Featuring brick walls accompanied by deer heads, painting of landscapes and touches of greenery scattered along the wooden bar, Black Bear Lodge is the perfect place to experience and indulge in their house wines, enjoy six dollar drink happy hour from Wednesdays to Fridays, or just catch up with friends with some quality beer on tap.
Although the Lodge’s predecessor Troubadour will be sorely missed by beloved regulars, the Lodge’s recent official opening in August 2011 will continue to keep its rustic appeal to regular patrons as well as fresh newcomers. With no cover charge, you can expect to see 18 – 30 year olds relishing in and appreciating the Lodge’s music scene without having to endure long lines and face over crowded bars. Despite its hipster and indie style crowd, the Lodge accommodates the likes of anyone willing to explore the seemingly mysterious, yet alluring bar.
The Lodge is also the place to come and discover new sounds, with live music performances to enjoy after a long day at work on some weekdays and weekends, from local gigs to touring bands. Experience all of this from the comfort of their red velvet chairs or funky looking chairs with drinks and snacks from the bar where you can watch singers on one of the two stages at the venue. While some gigs are ticketed shows, it is definitely worth coming in to discover new talent or to just support your favourite band.
Whether you’re looking for a more relaxed night out or if you just want to dance along to the eclectic mix of music, ranging from eighties classics to indie rock, the Black Bear Lodge is one of the few places in the Valley where you can escape from the regular club scene and just soak in the hassle-free atmosphere.
