The Paddington Tavern Review

Review by Tom Pirrone

Affectionately known to locals as “The Paddo”, The Paddington Tavern has been a Brisbane icon for many years now. Game day at nearby Suncorp Stadium often sees the main saloon bar overrun with football fans of all ages; testament to the wide variety of patrons that visit the venue. The Paddington Tavern appeals to many different age groups, although on an average night the crowd is usually slightly older than the younger generation that frequent some of the trendier venues around Fortitude Valley and the CBD.

With an American western themed interior, the Saloon Bar stays true to its name. The bar staff wear cowboy hats, while there are also bar stools that resemble horse saddles and various western themed memorabilia used to decorate the walls. The atmosphere is generally quite laid back, however on match day this all changes, with the Saloon Bar often reaching capacity. Dress codes are fairly relaxed, particularly during the week, although patrons should be reminded to dress in smart casual attire just in case; you never know with bouncers these days.

Drink prices are quite reasonable, depending on what day of the week it is, although your best bet for discounted drinks is during happy hour; between 4 and 6 daily. Tuesday nights are the main drawcard for the Saloon Bar, with $4 basics and $10 jugs, 2 for the price of 1 meal deals, and also karaoke from 8:30PM onwards. Sundays also offer similar value for money, as well as live DJs and entertainment. The venue doesn’t have cover charges; an added bonus for those looking to save a few dollars, and the meals are decent value for money; a smorgasbord buffet is on offer during the day for less than $10.

The free parking facilities out the back of the Tavern are the best bet for those who have brought their vehicle along, as parking along Given Terrace is a sure-fire way of copping a ticket. Patrons are also reminded to check out the events on offer at “The Sit Down Comedy Club” downstairs from the Tavern if you’re in the mood for a laugh. The venue’s gaming lounge is also worth visiting, with all the latest gaming entertainment on offer; from pokies to pool tables, as well as several widescreen TVs showcasing sport from all corners of the globe. Function rooms can be hired for events, and patrons are encouraged to enquire within about these facilities.

Whether you are new to Brisbane or have lived in the city for your entire life, “The Paddo” is a must see venue for anyone looking for a good time. As an iconic feature of Brisbane’s ever popular nightlife landscape, any true Brisbanite knows the unique feeling of grabbing a drink at the Paddington Tavern just a few hours before the Broncos or the Reds are about to kick off. If you haven’t already, make sure you get the chance to pop in for a visit and experience this famous venue for yourself.
