Fat Louie’s Review

Review By Bec Sigrist

Fat Louie’s is a pool hall that boasts local grungy/heavy metal acts and private karaoke rooms. It is hidden up three flights of stairs on Albert Street in Brisbane City and is not somewhere you would stumble across upon a drunken escapade. During the week local corporate clientele wind down over a few stubbies and games of snooker and on weekends the crowd is mostly comprised of students who look like they have raided their grandparent’s closets. Who said grunge was dead?

Having lived in Brisbane for over a decade I had heard of Fat Louie’s but have never been for the most obvious reason that I am an absolutely hopeless snooker player. Recently I organised a group of girlfriends to go and check out one of their private karaoke rooms and I must report our experience was quite fun. The Karaoke rooms have groovy couches and disco lights to get you in the mood, the technology isn’t that new but the wide track selection and cheap room hire prices are a huge draw card. We hired the room for two hours which was definitely long enough to warm up our vocal chords and time absolutely flew.

My hot tip is make sure you order a few drinks at the bar at any given time especially if there is a band on, otherwise you may spend your entire night waiting to be served.

Live local bands play both Friday and Saturday nights so it’s super busy and you may experience lengthy wait times for snooker tables.

The decor and vibe of Fat Louie’s is no frills so if you are looking to brush shoulders with Brisbane’s cool crowd keep looking! However, if you want to sink a few eight balls and listen to some local acts or hire your very own karaoke room then look no further.

A 2nd Fat Louie’s Review

Review By Larissa Willems

Fat Louie’s is a place that always seems to be buzzing and is a favourite for students and workers alike. Located in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD, just above Gilhooley’s on Albert Street, is a bar that offers more than just drinks and a dance floor.

Fat Louie’s has eight private karaoke rooms available for hire at all times of the day. Each features a powerful sound system, plush lounge suites and around 100,000 songs… and no karaoke room is complete without a mirror ball. Good thing Fat’s has that covered too!

Another reason this bar is such a favourite is for its snooker tables. Perfect for winding down after work or to start off with on a Saturday night, the tables are always fun. There is also a jukebox nearby, so even if you are horrible at pool, there is something to distract your friends while you make your shot.

The kind of people you’ll find here are usually the student types and suits looking for a place to sink a few beers. That being said, Fat Louie’s attracts patrons from all crowds. Last night saw what looks like a hen’s party and someone who I was convinced brought his own stubby. Basically anything goes as far as attire is concerned. Just don’t expect anyone to notice your new Tony Biancos in the dimly lit venue.

The decor is nothing to really be distracted by. A few lights on the dance floor’s ceiling and the wallpaper in the lounge area is where most of the features can be found. The bathrooms leave a lot to be desired: somewhat unkempt and combined with the various graffiti that fills the walls, both give you something to read while you do your business and add to the overall grungy feeling of the bar.

This shortcoming is easily countered by the cheap drinks and staffs service: about $5 for a beer, $4 for mixes and $2 for sodas. Sensible prices are something a lot of establishments have seemed to have forgotten, especially in the CBD. The line at the bar can be lengthy, especially on the weekend, but the bartenders are fast and friendly and if you’re chatting with a friend while waiting the time will fly.

On Fridays and Saturdays live bands play and bring on a solid crowd to the establishment. Usually local punk/grunge types, you’ll feel right at home if watching bands and chatting with some friends appeals to you more than bright lights and a crowded dance floor on the weekend.

Overall, the atmosphere at Fat Louie’s is welcoming and comfortable. Its karaoke rooms, pool tables, lounge areas and live entertainment make it perfect for after work drinks or a place to start on a big night out. Go to this unpretentious treasure once and it’s easy to see why so many come back.
