Alumbra Review

Written by Caitlyn Leggett

Set on the harbour in arguably the most beautiful part of Melbourne, the bright lights of the city skyline glint across the water, with all lights leading to Alumbra.

Before even entering the club we could get a feel for what to expect here, simply by studying the line out the front. Impeccably dressed, excitable 20-somethings were patiently awaiting entry and we got the idea that Alumbra is already a well-respected and popular hot spot for many RnB and house music lovers on a Saturday night.

One of my first thoughts when walking into this large, high ceiling complex was that I’d stepped out of the country and into the nightlife scene of New York City. This would later become even more obvious when I stumble into the bathroom to find NY plastered all over the walls.

The loft style venue, having recently had a makeover, is now complete with industrial low hanging lights, illuminated signs and vintage posters. It provides a very sophisticated and chic feel, with some added quirky modern touches attune to the Docklands area it resides.

The music wasn’t something uncommon to the New York scene either; with some of the best RnB music in the city and even including a live international act on stage. RnB lovers were everywhere, and this crowd knew how to have a good time.

Come for the music and the venue, but you’ll stay for the view. As you head outside, panoramic views of the harbour greet you. The lights of the city dazzle beyond the crowd, and it’s 100% worth the chill of the sea breeze.

The room backing onto this outdoor area has a large bar for all of your drinking needs. The cocktail list is nothing less than extravagant, with jam-jars starting from $16, but you can’t go past the New York cheesecake cocktail. Spirits start at $11 and beers on tap for $7, which is fairly reasonable considering the venues location.

My favourite part of the club, however, was the view from the room upstairs, exclusive for VIP guests. But before you hang your head in disappointment thinking only TV stars and AFL players will get this luxury, think again. VIP Booth packages are available for Saturday and Sunday nights and unlike their counterparts in ‘the Big Apple’, these booths won’t set you back a Lamborghini and your first born child, starting from just $340. Grab a group of 10 on a Saturday night and spend only $70 each for VIP entry, a choice of one or two bottles of spirits/champagne, an exclusive host for the evening and even finger food.

With a respected venue ticking all the right boxes, you can imagine the exclusive title that comes with it. The stunning ladies that come week after week dress to impress, and similar is expected of the men. So come early, and come glamorous!

Open only on weekends, Alumbra Nightclub is a rare diamond gem in the somewhat rough of the Melbourne pool. A great place to head out if you feel like an international party scene, without ever leaving the city.
