Review of Shotz Pool Lounge

Review by Alice McKenzie

Whether it’s shots of tequila or shots of pool you’re after, this venue has got it covered. And the plural is emphasized; there are plenty of tables and the drinks come in fives.

Situated just off Hindmarsh Square, Shotz is a short walk from the majority of Adelaide’s nightlife, but is worth the distance if it’s late night drinks you want. Always a little slow to get going, this venue is ideal for a beer and a hit of pool before heading out or a good way to wind down a wild night as it’s open until the early hours. The space in between gets busier and the dance floor gets more of a workout.

Saturday nights cater for the masses with two happy hours; round one at 10-11pm and a second at 1-2am. It lures the serious clubbers in with trays of five shots for $15 and it is an offer that’s pretty hard to refuse. Dual bars ensure both service and alcohol flows smoothly. A bartender who served me even provided a show with my beverage, in the form of some impressive cocktail juggling. The staff seem to be friendly and up for a chat, which is a welcome upgrade in service.

Upon entry, Shotz patrons are greeted with a dim interior decorated with bold street art inspired walls and checkerboard floor tiles. Reminiscent of a back alley, the theme continues with a neon ‘Shotz’ sign announcing the bar, complete with blue light accents. Distressed barrels act as stand-alone tables to accompany the pool tables. The grungy atmosphere attracts some edgy types who want to escape the mainstream crowd.

From what I’ve seen, this bar is popular with young students and early twenty year olds. In saying that, it is a versatile and adaptable place. The music seems to be a bit of a mash up of modern and older artists, but keeps the crowd happy. Music is not a dominant figure here: it provides a comfortable atmosphere for catching up with mates without being overpowering. After all, Shotz is a pool lounge and bar more than a club. A beer garden can be found out the back which offers patrons an alternate setting. The graffiti-like décor stretches to include this space. The silence of this area proves to be quite a stark contrast to the booming vibe of the indoor crowd, and is needed to break up the intensity.

Shotz is a popular pub crawl destination thanks to its ability to cater for all. Distinct from the endless string of pubs and clubs, this destination provides efficient service, cheap drinks and a good time. A dance floor satisfies the energetically inclined while the compact, while the pleasant beer garden provides a breath of fresh air.
