Bavarian Bier Cafe Parramatta Review

Review by Nina Subotic

Nothing short of ironic, with its fully restored historical church setting, the Bavarian Bier Café is the only way to get the best of Bavaria out west.

Initially I was surprised to find out that this church was in fact a bustling, enormous (and I repeat, enormous) bar and pub. My first very skeptical visit of the place (and mind you, the skeptical attitude came with the fact that it was dark, it was a church and it was not in the CBD) was countered upon arrival with not only an overwhelmingly welcoming aura, which spilled the liveliness of the café out into the streets of what I now call Sydney’s second CBD, but the fact that the Bier Café had something for everyone.

As clichéd as that may sound, this is definitely the case. Since my first visit I’ve been there with family for those achingly delicious famous pretzels that literally melt in your mouth. We’ve shared many a schnitzel and freshly made pizza, made in the pizza station, enjoyed with the extensive range and copious amounts of bier’s the café has to offer. I’ve been there with friends, for those celebratory nights and groggy recollections of what build up to form some sort of a memory.

If you’re after a bier then you can’t go past this place, with their award winning Bier’s made as per the strict Bavarian Purity Laws (Reiheitsgebot) of 1516, ranging from the Lowenbrau Original to the Paulner Premium Pils. With the bier consisting of only four natural ingredients of malt, barley, yeast and water, it’s no wonder the place bustles with lively chatter in the once softly spoken church room.

That first time I sauntered down through the church and out to the back to the bar, I was utterly surprised - this place was huge, and out here things had just turned up a notch. With live entertainment on weekends, the crowd and the rustic elongated table, I might as well have been on the set of a Viking movie, with my bier mug in hand...all I was missing was my Viking hat. If bier doesn’t do it for you, then do not be fooled by the seemingly biased exposure of bier. Shots, cocktails and mocktails go down a treat, especially when there’s nothing short of candy making them for you, and yes I speak from experience.

So yes, whether family, friends, acquaintances...whatever it is, give the west a chance, trust me you won’t regret or forget it.
