Review of Sting Bar

Review by Yasmin Blundell

If you’re looking for a place in the Sutherland Shire to host a function, enjoy cheap drinks or dance the night away, look no further than Cronulla’s Sting Bar. Located just around the corner from Shire nightlife hotspots, Northies and Fusion, Sting Bar is the perfect place to start your night out in Cronulla.

The spacious venue is dimly lit with signature red and black hues, features a large rectangular bar in the centre of the room, a dance floor adorned with disco balls and a DJ playing electronic and dance tunes to amp the crowd up for the night ahead. There’s also plenty of seating if you prefer to sit and enjoy the wide range of drinks and $15 pizzas on offer (or watch the cricket on the TVs, as my boyfriend was very excited to do).

If you arrive between 5-9pm, you can take advantage of $5 house cocktails, champagne and wine, or enjoy a bucket of four beers for $25. Outside of these times, drinks are a little pricier with the average beer being around $10, while the cocktails are $12. If it is cocktails you’re after, I’d recommend the Sting Special. Filled with an array of shots (including Alizé and vodka) mixed with lemonade, I would have been able to order the same drink all night!

One of the highlights of my experience at Sting (besides my amazing cocktail) was the friendly staff. They were approachable and ensured that we were happy with our drinks, even offering to top up my cocktail if I thought it was too strong. They thanked us as we left and said they hoped we had a good night. It was by far the best bar service I’ve ever had!

Partygoers at Sting are mostly in their mid 20s. The venue attracts a smaller crowd than the other bars and clubs around Cronulla, so I think Sting Bar would be better suited as a place to host a party or function. They will be able to cater to almost any type of function and provide pizza and tapas platters ranging from $75-$90 for your event.

I’d suggest heading to Sting on a Friday or Saturday night. The night I went was a Sunday and there was only one other group of people there besides us, but having been past Sting on Fridays and Saturdays before, it looked much busier on those nights. Crowds seem to flock to Northies on a Sunday, so if you want a quiet evening where you can enjoy a pizza or drinks with friends, Sting is an alternate option. The bar’s atmosphere is unique as you can either let loose with the DJ on the dance floor, or sit back and unwind with food and drinks watching the big screens or passerbys at the open windows at the front of the bar.

Sting Bar has great potential to be the biggest party destination in Cronulla, so it’s a shame more people don’t go there. I’d recommend it as the perfect venue for pre-drinks if you arrive while drinks are still $5. But if it’s a party or function you’re planning to host, I don’t think you’ll find a better venue to host it.
