The Oaks Review

Review by Jessica Sachse

The Oaks is a gorgeous amalgamation of indoor and outdoor dining, perfect for a birthday celebration or after work drinks with friends. Function rooms are available, with capacity ranging from 15 to 80 people.

I must confess I found myself at The Oaks purely by accident after nightmarish traffic on Military Road prompted me and a work colleague to take shelter with a drink. It was about 6pm on a Friday afternoon, and the old wooden doors of The Oaks were wide open, welcoming us in from the street. A friendly babble of incoherent voices could be heard from within.

We tried to get a seat outside in the circular beer garden but it was totally packed. All seating is placed around the garden’s main centre piece: a magnificent Oak tree from where the bar gets its name. A range of people were there, from businessmen with cigars to 20-somethings enjoying a drink, and families with children.

After subconsciously circling the outdoor area, my friend and I chose a table just inside the open door. We ordered a ‘Summer Plate’ from the Gourmet Pizza menu. The food was reasonably priced (at $18, it was a plate big enough for two) and fresh. It was a perfect companion to the champagne we also ordered.

Although the venue was packed, bar lines were almost non-existent. I put this down to the abundance of staff and facilities. Staff were friendly, although I was interrogated about my age from 3 different barmen. After this small hiccup however, drinks were happily flowing. The Oaks prides itself on quality food and wine, and it really did not disappoint. It is a 10 minute drive north of the Harbour Bridge – conveniently placed for a few starting drinks before a night in the city. It was a finalist the 2010 AHA awards for Best Outdoor Facility, so you know it has to be good.

According to local rumour, if an acorn falls on you from the giant Oak in autumn, you will be blessed with luck. So my advice to those of you seeking a casual drink, or a classy night out: try your luck at The Oaks.
