In Situ Bar Review

Review by Christina Bulbrook

Having spent the duration of the ride to the bar wondering what sort of a place would match a title like ‘In Situ’, somehow I was still surprised to find it was exactly that – a bar which has the semblance of having been built into its surroundings.

The candles, combined with tall bar tables and the small size of the bar itself work together to create an intimate feeling, perfect for catch-up or pre-dinner drinks on chilly winter nights. In summer, the adjoining courtyard is spectacular, offering meals as well as drinks in a more open-air setting.

On a Saturday night, the place is populated by backpackers, uni students and workers somewhere in their late 20’s or early 30’s, busily chatting (or, more accurately, yelling) over the live music which, although a little loud for those who want to talk, adds to the sensation of being cut-off from the rest of the world and attending a private concert with a select few others. Dress is smart-casual and jeans are allowed - even flannies, when worn with style. In general, girls dress up, guys dress down, but there are no exposed midriffs - quite a relief!

The drinks menu is spectacular in some ways and disappointing in others. The selection of beers is somewhat limited, priced between $7 and $8, as is the choice of wine by-the-glass. On the other hand, bottles of wine are available in great variety, including New Zealand, Aussie, French and Italian ones, though they are definitely on the pricey side, starting at around $50 and rising steadily.

The centrepiece of the drinks menu is the list of 23 varieties of cocktail, half of which are dedicated to In Situ’s ‘Signature Selection’. The creativity of the names themselves is sufficient to make you want to try them all, just to be able to say, “Yes, I’m drinking an Edie Sedgwick”, or, “I’m sipping my way through a Lychee Elderflower Martini”. The Apple Crumble Martini came recommended and the combination of vodka, elderflower and grapes in Eden sets the stage for a good night. All cocktails are set at $16.50 – not bad for the variety of choice offered.

In Situ is perfect for those looking for a location to catch-up with friends, a starting point for a big night out, or indeed just a bar to while away the whole night sipping cocktails. Whilst there is not the space for big occasions or functions, the intimacy of this bar, which feels like it has been there since the dawn of time and everything else has developed around it, will undoubtedly both surprise and please you, regardless of your reason for being there.
