Dee Why RSL Review

Review by Shirley Liu

You’re probably thinking… what, an RSL? But Dee Why RSL isn’t just a place where old people can gamble and eat; the top floor holds one of the most beautiful bars in Sydney’s Northern Beaches and is well known to all the locals. If you’re not a local – don’t worry; there are plenty of buses that can take you from the city from Wynyard.

The RSL has been one named one of the best in Sydney, and surprisingly, on Friday and Saturday nights it is the place to be for that semi-quiet night you wanted with your friends. One of the best things about a bar is that you can drink alcohol, yet enjoy good music in a buzzy atmosphere.

If you’re not a member of the RSL and live within the five-kilometer radius, you need to get a member to sign you in. Otherwise, buying a membership is five dollars and its lasts you one year. If you’re not a local, then its recommended you go with a friend who lives in the Northern Beaches.

The décor of the RSL shows off a high-class style lounge, with fish tanks of tropical fish, a huge glass fireplace, a garden of lights and classic couches everywhere for people to have a drink and relax. Once you’ve signed in, follow your way up the sparkly escalators and head towards the music and chatter.

The RSL has one main bar and a secondary bar near the balcony. The environment is lively and exciting, with everyone chattering away along with live music playing in the background – there are even people dancing to the music. Huge ranges of songs are blasted out, ranging from the top 40 to the underground indie music. The balcony is probably the highlight of the venue, overlooking a garden of trees and fairy lights that really make it incredibly romantic and beautiful. There is more than enough space for everyone to sit down comfortably with booths, couches in a circle and bar and stools.

The crowd is predominantly in their 20s and 30s, and people are dressed very well, with heels and buttoned up shirts seen everywhere.

Drinks are cheap – with a huge range as well! However, you can only buy cocktails like Long Islands and Cosmopolitans from the main bar. Save the spirits and beer for the secondary bar.

If you’re looking for more to do, try your luck at the Pokies room that is across from the bar (and use your winnings to buy more drinks for your mates).

Dee Why RSL also hosts one of the biggest sports lounges in the Northern Beaches. If your favorite sports team is playing on the night – it’ll be playing on one of their many screens.
