Li'l Darlin Review

Review by Kelly Teng

I’ve found the perfect little bar.

Situated on Victoria Road next to the iconic Victoria Room and Camperdown Cellars, Li’l Darlin is a gem just waiting to be unearthed. Boasting beautiful décor and a unique menu boasting pizza, tapas, and delectable cocktails, this is a venue that you may walk past initially – but once you walk inside, you’ll never be able to forget it.

Opened in late 2011, Li’l Darlin exudes a relaxed but classy atmosphere – kind of like if The Ivy and The Corridor had a lovechild. Plants decorate the ceiling, and the soft lighting creates an intimate atmosphere that just makes patrons want to sit down, eat, drink, and talk away the night.

And that’s exactly what you’ll do, with a handcrafted menu that undergoes rigorous taste testing before being allowed to grace the bar floor. Li’l Darlin’s list of pizzas and tapas is definitely unique; from chilli prawns ($11.90) to a fantastic Peking duck pizza ($13.90), the selection is eclectic, affordable, and something you just won’t find anywhere else.

Similarly, the drinks menu has a variety of different flavours that will suit all tastebuds – and when I say that, I mean it. For all the girly girls, there’s a beautiful Fairy Floss martini ($16.50) and Lil Hubba ($16.50) to give you your sugar and alcohol all in one.

For everyone else, the Blood Orange Margarita ($16.50) is a smooth cocktail with just a hint of tequila flavour, the wine list is impressive for all those connoisseurs who want flavour to complement their meal… and for those that want a blast from the past, Li’l Darlin’s selection of Icyee cocktails ($12) is a great new spin on alcoholic slushies – just don’t drink it too fast because the combination of a slightly spinning head and a brain freeze is not the ideal end to a drink!

Li’l Darlin pulls in a crowd of professionals, mainly between the mid-20s and mid-30s. The venue isn’t the kind of place to get rowdy and wild; rather, it’s a place to go if you want a cosy night with friends.

Dress is casual, but – like the majority of the Darlinghurst crowd – everyone still manages to look fabulously fresh and like they’ve been pulled out of Vogue magazine. Even the staff (who deliver impeccable service with a smile) look like they’ve been plucked from a fashion spread.

In the end, the venue is top-notch and serves up an experience worthy of its name. For a night out that delivers in every regard – darling, you can’t go past Li’l Darlin.
