The Cuban Place Review

Written by Samantha Woodhill

Your expectations of a bar named The Cuban Place are undoubtedly satisfied by this rum bar on York Street.

You are met, upon arrival, with a choice to take the staircase up to the eatery and bar, complete with live Cuban music and waitresses in Latino dresses, or underground to the intimate cocktail bar, which presents somewhat of a dilemma. It’s lively yet relaxed, even on a Wednesday.

Booths in the upstairs corner cater nicely for a rowdy group, with table service, while downstairs has a cosy and more chilled vibe, where the old fashioned cocktail bartenders will ask you how your day was. There’s no age limit, you’ll be just as comfortable with a group of mates as you would with your mum at this trendy bar.

Though famous for the Havana Club mojito, try their spiced for a variation on the classic. With a collection of over 150 varieties, these guys have their finger on pulse of the spiced rum trend. Strong Cuban beer and a healthy range of rum cocktails, the menu couldn’t possibly disappoint.

The shared Grande Mojito, served in a bucket will keep you going for the night. For the enjoyment of at least three people, the festive drink has to be seen to be believed. It’s a little tacky, but a fun gimmick none the less.

Wednesday’s dollar tacos are absolutely not to be missed. Cost efficient and quality, they’re definitely worth more than you’ll pay for them. The only downside is the cheap eats replace the 5-7pm happy hour on a Wednesday. For bargain drinks, you’ll need to make it there on a Tuesday or Thursday.
