What to Expect @ Velluto

Review by Sarah Han

When I ventured out to Potts Point to have some champagne and cheese at Velluto on a rainy Monday night, I wasn't pleased to be wading through the pouring rain. But after having a glass of Pommery Brut Royale and enjoying a three cheese board, I completely changed my mind. What a gratifying evening!

Velluto is a small champagne and wine bar with a luxe and lavish decor. Black velvet curtains hang from the ceilings. Large gold and bronze mirrors adorn the walls. Some walls are made of sandstone; some are wooden and black. Black couches and leathered chairs fill the room. Flower cushions add a pretty factor. But the overall atmosphere is dark and mysterious.

This bar seems a little displaced in Potts Point, a stone's throw away from the garish lights of Kings Cross. It represents pretty much the opposite of Kings Cross: dimly lit by a few lamps and candles on the tables, creating an intimate and cosy ambience. I love how the menu and coasters are matching - both are black and have the Velluto emblem printed onto them. Nice touch.

The cheese plate is a little on the small side, but makes up for it in taste. It includes a French Brique Daffinois, an Italian Bleu di Mancenisio, and a Swiss Fromart d'Alpage Cheddar. The cheeses come with Lavosh, muscatels and prune & walnut rolada. All very good. I also try the double shot Bloody Mary, which I order spicy. It's tasty and satisfying.

Understandably, this bar is on the expensive side, but seeing as it's a champagne bar, it's expected. The champagne list is formidable and most of the "house" spirits cost $10 (but know that the house vodka is Belvedere).

I'm so pleased that I endured the rain and tried this lovely bar regardless of the weather. Though it's a bit pricey, it's worth it. I'll come back for more champagne and cheese in a heartbeat.
