What To Expect @ The Carlisle Bar

Review By Samantha Woodhill

Dimly lit, small tables and retro decor, Carlisle Bar is something of a speakeasy.

Conveniently located on Kellett Street in the Cross, this crisp and upmarket new bar separates the bourgeois from the street hooligans.

With quirky cocktail menu, designed to be almost illegible, the barman recommends anything from a $7 quick cocktail special to a concoction you’ve never heard of. Extensive options cater to all tastes of cocktail drinkers, not the place to go if you’re just after a beer. It’s fancy, so be on your best behavior, but the prices are certainly cheaper than you’d expect.

It’s a good place to start the night if you’re peckish. The kitchen offers more than just tapas with pasta options for under $20. The haloumi is somewhat a signature dish and absolutely worth a try even if you’re not in the mood for a chunk of cheese, an exceptional food menu for a trendy venue offering table service.

The after work crowd on a Friday night is mostly groups with reserved tables. It’s the kind of place to go to on the ‘way out’, not the place to go to for a casual drink. The chairs are pretty uncomfortable so prepare yourself if you’re in for the long haul.

The service is outstanding and the wait staff are attentive and extremely informative. Some of them are shirtless which is a bit strange but seems to match the oddly placed stripper pole in the second bar. Perhaps it’s more fitting as the DF kicks off.

The website describes itself as the ‘watering hole of choice for celebs, socialists and VIPs’ which is probably a bit over the top, but all in all a fabulous place to go if you can overlook the pretension.
