What to Expect @ The Zanzibar

Review by Kassia Byrnes

On the eve of my 21st birthday I gathered the girls together for one last night out as a 20 year old. Actually, any excuse would do – I just happened to have a particularly good one.

Two of my friends had just moved into Newtown so we thought we’d christen it with a few drinks. The night was absolutely freezing so it proved more difficult than expected to even leave the house. The only way to face it was to get into the vodka… which we did, willingly.

An hour and a half later we donned on our coats and felt brave enough to face the night. It was still freezing. Half running, we made it to King Street. Unsure exactly where we wanted to go but certain we wanted to do it quickly, we walked past Zanzibar and couldn’t ignore how warm it looked.

Zanzibar is exactly the type of place you’d expect to find in Newtown: funky to a fault, walls covered in only the ‘coolest’ posters with a young and trendy customer base to match. At ground level you can choose from long high tables, conveniently located right next to the bar, or you can watch the world happening outside as you sip your drink sitting at a window bench.

Upstairs is just as funky and provides a dance floor that gets quite full of a Saturday night after everyone has had taken full advantage of the $8 cocktails before 10pm. This is just as well because you’d need to be drunk not to notice the horrible smell of toilet that wafts from the bathrooms right next to main action, which is a convenient location for everything but you’re nostrils.

I’m a fan of anywhere with a 7 days a week cocktail happy hour, but I suggest staying downstairs and finding a different venue to fulfil your dancing needs. Your nose doesn’t deserve it.
