Mr. Fox is a boutique watering hole/day cafe situated on the Cleveland St end of Crown St. Opening its doors in late 2010, we have fast become known as a place that welcomes all comers, with a vast aray of different tastes, both culinarily and musically. Chill with a coffee and a book in the day, or enjoy live music, vinyl nights and live art all at least once a week by night, there is something for everyone.

Mr Fox Review

Review By Emily Jacobs

Mr Fox is part of the small bar revolution in Sydney. Hidden on the apparently dodgy end of Crown St, it's one of many small bars sprouting up in the area, exuding class and cool.

Squashed between a bank and a pizza place, Mr Fox is small and cosy. Wooden tables and stools dot the small dark space, creating a sense of intimacy. There is enough light to see your companions, but not enough to see everyone else's, adding to the comfy setting. Admittedly, we are in on a Wednesday, so the place isn't full. Of the people who are there, most fall under the 20-35 age range and look like the sort of people who have been coming to these kind of places for years. It's not hard to see why.

The standout feature of the room is the chalkboard wall running down one side. The wall is completely covered in chalk graffiti, some of it excellent drawings and some just a scribble. If you find a chunk of chalk, or bring your own, you can add your own little contribution.

The cocktails are averagely priced, ranging from $12-17. Luckily for my group, it's 2 for 1 cocktails from 5-7, meaning we can get two large cocktails for about $14. There are some out of the ordinary but delicious options on the drink menu. The popular ones with my friends are the lychee blackberry caprioska and lemon meringue pie. The latter is definitely for those with a sweet tooth.

The food here is also a hit. We order a variety of canapes and they are devoured quickly. Favorites include the zucchini fritters and lamb kebabs. It's not too expensive either, working out to about $10 per person between 7 people. However, the highlight is the free popcorn that arrives at about 9pm. It's unlimited, and flavoured salt and vinegar, hitting the spot.

Overall, Mr Fox is much like the movie of a similar name - fantastic. It' s a great place to chill out and enjoy some great company, without the pretentiousness that can sometimes pervade these kind of establishments. If you can find it, it's definitely worth a visit.
