Review of Goros

Goro’s is designed as a quirky-cool Japanese fusion bar, complete with karaoke, bamboo booths and, of course, a healthy selection of sake. The eccentric theme is carried through to the five-star Japanese style snacks, which range from nibbles through to late night ramen. Major thumbs up.

An impressive back bar with a pretty serious selection of spirits will keep you happy if you’re adventurous with your whiskeys. But if you’re not, stick with the interesting imported Asian beers and give the uncreative and overpriced share cocktails a miss.

The atmosphere is buzzing when it’s busy and between the pool tables and arcade games, there’s no risk of boredom on a quiet night. In a booth, you’re part of fun, but it’s still intimate. The only inconvenience is that if you manage to nab one, you’ll still have to order and pay at the bar (which is a bit of a g-up considering you’re not exactly paying pub prices).

On a quiet street in Surry Hills, it’s hardly the sort of place you’d just swing by on your way out or even on your way home. But for an inner city bar you’d have to actively seek out, the service leaves much to be desired. The bartenders are far too casual and disengaged for a city bar, certainly not what you’d expect as a seasoned Sydney bar-goer.
