Helm Bar Review

Review By Julia Roscoe

When a friend of mine had a work function on at Helm Bar, I decided it was high time I paid a visit to this establishment situated on the harbours edge in Cockle Bay. With it's relaxed yet sophisticated vibe, this is one of those must see places, if only to sit on the sun filled deck and bask in the unparalleled views of Darling Harbour. We descended on Helm Bar at around 5.30 on a Friday afternoon, and we shared the deck with several other function groups. Offering a quintessentially laidback ambience, Helm Bar is the perfect destination if you're looking for somewhere to have after work drinks, or casual drinks with friends. The event was catered and the menu offered some tasty tapas style treats including spring rolls and calamari, though they offer a whole variety of packages if you're looking for somewhere to host an event. The only issue we had was the number of people they had crammed on the deck - we barely had space to move, and being such a hot afternoon it was slightly uncomfortable.

Helm Bar caters for the corporate market (mainly over 25s), though come nightfall there were plenty of tourists about, perhaps lured here by the spectacular views. It was a fairly casual affair, though there were many suits about early in the evening.

There was always a line at the bar and service wasn't the most efficient. We were also hard-pressed to get a smile out of the bartenders, who seemed as though they would rather be anywhere but here. In saying that, it was like a mini party in the line, and this was a great place to meet some friendly new faces. They also had a great selection on offer from classic Australian wines to spectacular cocktails, to a range of Australian and International beers, both on tap and by the bottle, and prices were very reasonable (though notably, there is no happy hour here).

Once the sun went down, we were treated to the sparkling lights of the city night, which look as though they are dancing on the harbour. With the events all but over, we were able to take full advantage of the large deck, enjoying the open space and welcoming the cool breeze coming off the harbour. Grabbing one of the long wooden tables and chairs lining the edge of the deck, it's a great spot for a relaxing drink.

Inside offers a large dance floor with a live DJ spinning some great tunes, though not many people had their dancing shoes on. There are also couches where you and your crew can spread out and relax. With a major emphasis on relaxation at Helm Bar, this venue makes a welcome change from the bustling CBD bars.

Even if you only stop in at Helm Bar for a drink, you will be amazed by the spectacular harbour views, be it a glorious sunset or a dazzling lightshow you are treated to.
