ECQ Bar Review

Review By Miranda Luby

Wherever you choose to sit back and enjoy a drink in Sydney, the combination of a cocktail in hand, a view in sight and a sun about to set is hard to beat.

Encased in glass shutters, marble walls and immaculate wooden floors, ECQ is Quay Grand’s spectacular mezzanine bar. Perched on the east edge of the bustling tourist hot spot that is Circular Quay, it manages to exude a quiet grace that makes you feel more than one floor above the overly desperate street performers and bizarre techno-aboriginal buskers.

During the day, the glass walls of the sun-drenched bar open out onto the busy harbour and its spectacular views float in on the salty breeze. There is a distinct pleasure in watching the ferries dance across the bright blue water in front of the arching steel of the bridge.

Ordering food and drinks at the bar then settling down on the soft leather couches gives a more informal feel to what first appears to be a slightly snobby restaurant. It only takes a second glance around to feel initial impressions transforming into pleasing observations; friendly relaxed bar staff, casual diners, that holiday feel that only water front venues seem to deliver.

The relaxing and chic atmosphere is shared by only a handful of business people, drinking, eating a chatting, dotted down the long room. It’s not exactly buzzing and some people might find it a little too quiet, but if you have good company it’s very relaxing.

The menu provides Australian cuisine I would describe as high-end bar food and stylish beverages at fairly reasonable prices. You can order a classically elegant B.L.T ($18.50 with fries) and a lychee & peach martini ($15) with a dazzling view of arguably the most beautiful harbour in the world.

It’s no wonder the house’s specialty drink is proudly coined ‘Location, Location, Location.’

By night, ECQ bar becomes a place to be seen. As the city lights up spectacularly before you, the eye candy streams into the bar for some evening drinks. The patrons are late 20’s and up and are mostly coming from work in the city.

It can get quite busy on a Friday night so ordering might take a while but personally I think it’s worth it for the atmosphere and the view.

The bar has an extensive list of domestic and imported beers and wines as well as just about any spirit or liqueur you could name, straight or shaken into one of their gorgeous cocktails.

Despite its location, ECQ bar manages to remain relatively unpretentious and reasonably priced. It’s is a great place for lunch on a sunny afternoon as well as after work drinks that continue late into the night.
