The Saint George Review

Review by Tom Zaunmayr

The Saint George Hotel is one of an increasingly large numbers of club style pubs popping up all over Perth in recent years. Tucked away in the aptly named northern suburb – Innaloo – The Saint has developed quite a reputation as an exciting, vibrant venue amongst the younger generations.

The Saint seems a very nice, upmarket venue on first impressions – you even have to walk up stairs just to enter! Fancy glasswork goes as far as the eye can see and ambient lighting adorns all the inner walls. Outside is all timber decking & large shade sails while inside gives way to leather & carpet. Even just looking from the outside you can see the architect had style in mind.

The Saint fills a big void in the area for two demographics. Firstly, the old Nookenburra faithful have taken to the Saint due to their old ‘turf’ (now the Botanica) being turned into an upmarket bar & restaurant. During the day the bogans mix in with the rest, drawn in by cheap drinks & relaxed dress standards.

Come dusk on Fridays to Sundays and the Saint fills that other large Northern suburbs void – clubbing. The Saint gives the North a much more attractive venue option over the infamous Bar120, with 18-25 year olds flocking through its doors in vast quantities. The local bogans rock up too, this time wearing their favourite Ed Hardy shirts to fit in.

From Friday to Sunday the Saint turns the volume up to 11. Resident DJs churn out top40, electro, house and a few old school favourites over a dance floor that puts many of Perths clubs to shame! The large floor is packed from 7pm to close – full of energy and lust, as one would expect at your typical nightclub. Do try to behave though, its one of those places where tensions can boil over pretty quickly, and you don’t want to get on the wrong side of a bogan pack.

Thankfully, when it comes time to quench your thirst you wont have to find a second job to afford it. Drinks here are cheap, with their decent sized range of beers going for $5-$11. They have a small cocktail range – but it covers the basics, and wont cost you more than $15.

The Saint offers another feature for the more mature mindset. On the quiet side of the restaurant sits a tidy little wine bar. It’s a great place to escape the mayhem of the clubbing scene. The Wine list is little over a page long and you can expect to pay anything from $26 for a local red or white to $120 for the Moet & Chandon. Yes you can still hear the driving beats in the background, but the intimacy of the area does enough to mask it adequately.

The Saint George Hotel has become a popular destination for all the Northies, you don’t get the taxi fees of going to the city, and you don’t get the stigma associated with Bar120 or Joondalup. Free entry is also a bonus! It’s a great, cheap place to spend a night out right in the heart of suburban Perth.
