HUSH @ Shape Bar Review

Review by Jeremy Truong

Is it the great music? Is it the classy crowd? Is it the fancy lighting? Is it the fantastic dance floors? Or is it the excellent organisation and laidback nature of the event coordinators?

Perhaps it is a combination of everything which makes HUSH such a great place to spend your Saturday night; if you enjoy the likes of Usher, Beyoncé, Trey Songz, and Alicia Keys, then this is definitely a place you need to check out!

The Shape Bar, located on Hay Street in East Perth, plays host to the R&B; themed night every second Saturday night – with alternative weekends being Big Ape – and has grown from strength to strength over the two years it has been around.

Once Perth’s best kept secrets on a weekend, HUSH has developed into a premier event, adding newer and better things every year. Organisers have seen how HUSH has grown since opening, and now allow non-members to enter at a price of $20, with members paying $15 – a price well-worth paying.

When HUSH turned two in 2012, it relaxed the rules ‘collared shirts only’ and ‘no sneakers’ (for guys, of course), as well as extinguishing the queue to get upstairs – where you can enjoy a different DJ spinning his tracks.

The style and vibe is fresh, with a splash of class. And together with the music and two dance floors, it can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of what music you are into and the crowd you hang around. Watch out for the dancing too – if you are a ‘lurker’ or ‘jumper’, then the dance floor is not where you should be – leave it to those who know what they are doing.

Another note on the crowd is the youth, vibrance, and the class. So ladies, you need not worry about the sleazy, poorly dressed guys unnecessarily dancing up on you. You can enjoy a (reasonably priced) drink and cruise through the night incident-free. Another bonus with the drinks at HUSH is that you are served relatively quickly, and sometimes the bartenders make your drink a little stronger!

The entrance to the Shape Bar is a little messy – with a bar five metres in and directly to the right of the doors. But once you move past the crowd, the funky illuminating lights and lasers take over and you are instantly drawn to the dance floor.

But there's more; if you think that dance floor is outrageous, you have yet to check out the upstairs section. And if you need a break from things, the patio outside is also quipped with a bar, lounges, and its own coloured lighting – all to keep you in the mood of the music.

It is worth mentioning – if you are to make a night out of this, make sure you plan it well. Being located in East Perth, it is a fairly long walk to get to the city and/or Northbridge. But in saying that, you will enjoy your night so much you will not be leaving until the place closes.

Even if you are not into this music, it is still worth checking out, because everything about this nightclub is what you look for in a quality night out. It is a nice change from the inner city with a guarantee of you returning, wanting more of the music, atmosphere, and good memories... well, of what you can remember – at least.

Big Ape @ Shape Bar Review

Review By Hamish Hastie

Like the dangerous side of dance music? Then you're fit to get out of shape at Shape, another one of Perth's late night clubs that cater for a niche dance music scene.

I frequent this place a lot because of the international acts that play here and just generally the odd vibe beamed from within its doors. After a $10-$15 entry (possibly more for if there is a special act on) you enter a cool bar area that makes you question whether you're at the right place. Here, you can wet your whistle or head outside to the spacious backyard-like smokers area and chill out on the op-shop couches.

Once you've explored downstairs your senses will draw upstairs where all kinds of tunes are being spun. As you exit the stairs you become inundated by a large bar, heat, mirrors, and red and blue light. The sunken dance floor resembles a pit and it puts you right up at the decks. The upstairs and downstairs are complete opposites and yet work well together. If you've gotten over stomping about in your own sweat then head down stairs to grab a drink (reasonably priced with spirits at about $8 and beers $7 and above) and try your luck with the opposite sex or cool off in the outside.

Top 40 does't rear its commercial head here. You'll hear anything from techno to drum and bass within Shapes walls which is great for me, but not so much for those trying to get jacked on their next Rihanna fix.

At Shape you won't find any squares. Everyone belongs to some sub-culture related to the music they like; expect a lot of skinny legs jeans and Vans. This doesn't mean the place is too pretentious for its own good though - if you choose the right night you'll get a pumping crowd forgetting how tight their jeans are and getting chaotic on the dance floor.

Sometimes Shape is a bit quiet due to its odd location on the east side of the city but if you experience a night like this don't be alarmed; try next week and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Basically, if you take your dance music seriously then you'll love Shape, if not - stick to Northbridge.
