Metro Bar Review

Review by James Boston

Choosing a bar to start your night out at is like playing Russian roulette. Pick incorrectly and your vibe is dead. Pick correctly and your luck will follow you for the rest of the night. If you’re having trouble picking; the Metro Bar and Bistro is a safe bet.

Located within walking distance of most of the city’s bars and nightclubs, this sharply designed bar is definitely one of Perth’s best pre-drinking venues. The Metro gives its patrons two choices: sit outside and enjoy moderately priced drinks while enjoying the city view or stay inside and let music, vibe and cocktails prepare you for a big night out on the town.

The Metro is deceptively large, with your first impression being a skinny corridor of a venue. One side is the bar itself and the other, a small outside area that backs out to the convention centre courtyard. However on closer inspection you’ll notice you’re missing the best bit, with a spacious back terrace, a secondary bar and big city views.

The best feature about the terrace is it provides a quiet refuge for people to talk, catch-up and start on a few drinks. The drink prices sit at about nine dollars for a house red, house white, pint or shot. This is a reasonable price for the refined look of the place but it will turn away most people looking for a cheap pre-drink before clubbing.

The wine list displays the standard Australian and New Zealand reds and white unless you are looking to buy the bottle, where there are some impressive Italian and Spanish imports. The seven different beers on tap cover a respectable range, from imported Japanese Kirin to locally brewed Little Creatures Pipsqueak cider. However it is their cocktails on which the Metro has built a reputation, with their cocktail list changing regularly to keep up with the season’s taste.

The only dilemma about locking in the Metro Bar as your choice is its tendency to pack out on weekend nights, with functions varying from 18th to Hen’s nights. It is variation of clientele that gives the bar a risky feel but that only adds to the vibe.

As a recommendation I wouldn’t say anyone below 20 should start their night here. The smart dress standards would probably conflict with the average attire of the less classy place you are moving onto. For everyone else, this bar is a number one spot for friends to meet up, get a buzz on and head out.

The people who have already bitten the bullet will know what I’m talking about. For everyone else; I say take the gamble and start the night off with a bang.
