Durty Nelly’s was designed and constructed in Ireland by Irish architects, using genuine Irish materials. It was then disassembled transported to Shafto Lane in the heart of Perth Western Australia and reassembled. In this sense, it is safe to say that Durty Nellys is Perth’s first and only genuine Irish pub.

What To Expect @ Durty Nelly's Irish Pub

Review By Elizabeth Cahill

Durty Nelly’s is a large Irish pub hidden down an alleyway off Murray Street. Whilst it can be tricky to find, the sheer amount of people that fill the venue is a good indication that you’ve reached your destination. Tables line the entire pub including the front veranda and booths are also available inside. The outside veranda area is a good place to be in summer, with the shade of the veranda allowing the heat to still be enjoyed without becoming overwhelming.

The interior of the pub has dark lighting but a homely feeling, due to the wooden furnishings and warm colour palette that is used throughout the pub. It can be slightly squishy, as every inch of the pub has been utilised for something, whether it be another bar, room for tables and chairs, or simply just walk ways for people to get through. But I think this is part of the appeal and adds to the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of the pub.

The menu at Durty Nelly’s is simple and what you’d expect at a pub with your classic chicken parmigiana, pastas, burgers, steaks, etc. However, if you want the full Irish experience, then a small traditional Irish menu is also available that includes bangers & mash, corned beef sandwiches and a black pudding stack for the game ones. The menu lacks vegetarian and gluten free options, so be wary if you require specific dietary requirements. But fear not about leaving hungry, the serving sizes are extremely generous. If you finish the entire meal (which admittedly, I didn’t), you will need to take 5 minutes to relax your stomach and make some more room.

The beverages suit the Irish theme with many wines of all different varieties on offer, as well as an extensive range of whiskies from Ireland, Scotland and other international places. They also offer many draught beers, those sitting at the top of the menu being what you’d expect to drink in an Irish pub such as your Guinness’s and Kilkenny’s.

The patrons cover all ages. On a Friday night for example, the young families come in early and enjoy a meal while the pub is a little quieter, then the older families come in and enjoy a meal with the work groups who have come for a drink after finishing work for the week, before the Friday night crowd kicks in, which are those who have come for a loud few and a meal before moving on elsewhere for the night. They also have a solo act in the main bar area who sings a range of songs that help the relaxed mood. The songs don’t over power the conversation going on and all the songs are recognisable to most.

If you are looking for an Irish pub in Perth, then I would definitely recommend Durty Nelly’s. A lot of the surrounding patrons were Irish and the hospitable nature of the pub makes you feel like you just went to your mum's for a familiar home cooked meal. The pub is loud but that’s due to all the happy banter and big fish stories that comes from surrounding tables. It’s definitely a lot of fun there, no matter what size the group you’re with and you won’t leave feeling disappointed.
