The Conservatory Rooftop Bar ReviewReview by Rhiannon Williams
The recent addition to the Perth bar scene has been the elusive rooftop bars popping up and around the city. I must admit to being a little excited that Perth had followed this trend from our Eastern state friends and simply had to check out The Conservatory.
Based in the heart of the popular Murray Street bar and nightclub strip above Carnegies, The Conservatory has been designed for an intimate and exclusive rooftop experience with a range of areas to suit different occasions, from dining areas, to function rooms and the bar with indoor and outdoor balcony seating.
Mbr>Staying true to its name the décor of the bar is lit green with the addition of Astroturf on the balcony giving the impression that the patrons are attending an upper class barbeque. Coinciding with this notion is the dress code which requires patrons to be neat and polished at all times to reflect the style and nature of the bar.
The Conservatory has no explicit entry fee but does require a small donation for charity as you enter which is a nice touch, although I dare say the drink prices make up for the revenue lost on entry fee.
They have an extensive wine, beer and cocktails list. Wine and champagne are priced around $8-$15 and they boast there own special reserve wine and champagne list for those who are after something more expensive. Beer and cider ranges from $8-$18 which in most people’s opinion is pretty outrageous for a standard drink. The cocktail list is probably the best part about The Conservatory (priced from $17-$25) which is also reasonably expensive but they do taste great - despite having to wait for awhile.
The great thing about The Conservatory is that it attracts a wide range of crowds. On a Friday night the young business crew start there weekend with a few drinks, however on Saturday night the young and slightly older party goers of Perth head there to begin there night before heading out later on. As for Sundays I would not say it is as popular as it potentially could be, but if you were after somewhere with the perfect combination of relaxed and refined The Conservatory is it.
I myself have been to The Conservatory a number of times and each time have left a little more disappointed than the last. I get the impression that the bar is trying to aim for a certain style but just can’t quite grasp what that is yet. Despite having a great range of drinks on offer the actual bar is small compared to most others leaving patrons waiting an exceptionally long time for only one or two drinks. Another aspect lacking is the vibrancy of the place, I have never seen a line waiting to get in there and on the Saturday nights that I have been there it is only ever about 30 per cent full.
Overall I would recommend The Conservatory as the place to begin the night for a couple of drinks before heading to somewhere else with a bit more ambience or alternatively if you were after a place to have a quiet couple without the push and shove of the busier bars The Conservatory would be perfect.
