The Left Bank Bar Review

Review By Andrea Downey

Located on the infamous Fremantle foreshore, away from the busy nightlife of Fremantle City but never delivering a dull moment, is an upbeat little bar jam packed with fun.The Left Bank is a charming little restaurant/bar which gives off a definite cafe strip aura which is so typical and unique to Fremantle. Although this bar is not a late night adventure, as it closes at 12am, it is the perfect place for pre drinks before heading into town for the night or even as after work drinks to welcome the weekend in style on a Friday night. Whatever the occasion, there is something for everyone.

The first thing I noticed when I walked into The Left Bank was the comfortable yet upbeat atmosphere. Everyone is very chilled and just focused on having a good time. This is a considerable bonus to a place like this, in my opinion there is nothing worse than going out to have a good time and having to dodge the occasional bar-side brawl. Along with the chilled out patrons, there is a stage set-up for a live band (all outside in an alfresco setting by the water) and a little further into the venue there are the inside bars complete with very comfy looking couches for those who like to drink their wine in comfort. During the time that bands are not playing there is very funky upbeat music playing over the speaker system.

The most eye-catching element of this modern bar is the way they have designed and decorated it. Firstly its location is perfect and probably the most attractive part about this venue. From the outside seating area you can see right across the water of the foreshore and although, on the other side of the water, you can see the shipping companies and containers, there is something special about the light flickering across the water. There is also very well placed mood lighting. Most of the outside lights are coloured (mainly goldy-yellow) which creates a very summery feel, as if you are in a beach bar. It’s very fitting for the alfresco outside area with the stage for the live bands.

The prices for The Left Bank are a tad on the expensive side. They don’t serve beer on tap which makes it much more expensive and also a little behind most bars which offer a wide range of beer on tap. For a stubby of beer you’re looking at paying about $9, which is a little on the high side. You can get a glass of wine for about $12 or a bottle for about $30 (on average). Again, these prices are slightly high. One of the best deals you can get at The Left Bank are the $10 cocktails offered every Friday night from 5pm, they have a pretty good range and no girl can refuse a $10 cocktail deal! On the downside of this deal they stopped serving cocktails before 10pm which means if you want to take true advantage of the cheap liquor you need to get in early. There is also a small range of food available at reasonable prices for those who get peckish in between drinks.

All in all, The Left Bank is a chilled out summery bar located in a fantastic location alongside a very tranquil foreshore. It is perfect for lazing away beautiful evenings enjoying the casual atmosphere but only if you have the money to fund your enjoyment. It is more for business people who have the money to spend rather than those who don’t. If money is not an issue, it is the perfect place to start a good night.
