Knowing your way around and being familiar with nightclubs and indeed the city is a huge advantage. You have an understanding of which bars and what scenes tickle your fancy best, what kind of scene and people each has to offer and how pricey or reasonable each are. The answer to this question would seem to be a resounding yes, but somehow it is not, not even close.
Go With The Flow
In the glitz and glamour of the nightclub scene, there is always an air of uncertainty. The unpredictability and capriciousness of a night out adds to the fun and therefore sometimes it’s better to remain unsure of exactly how your night will pan out. Whenever we hit up a new place, we’re trying to recapture the excitement we experienced when we were the new kids on the block and as we get older and more ‘street smart’ the spontaneity we used to take for granted begins to dissipate.
The Territory
The things we do when we’re out on the town are usually anything but smart. Blasting off to the moon and back on a weeknight, hooking up with a workmate, texting or calling your ex are all things most of us can admit to whilst out on the sauce. Not smart, but a lot of fun at the time. Who wants to be a street smart responsible reveller when you can be a blind party animal? Besides, all those naughty things we do are mitigated and excused by the fact we were out on the town. What better excuse is there than, ‘sorry I was out clubbing.’ All is forgiven.
Wisdom, You Shall Have
Admittedly, being street smart can be a hell of an advantage – especially considering street smart is usually synonymous with safety. But learning the ins and outs and acquiring your knowledge of how to remain safe is the enjoyable part. As they say it’s the journey not the destination. Becoming street smart is important but you don’t have to acquire its tasty nuggets of wisdom in order to enjoy the scene.
Chillax
Chill. Yes, the city can be a dangerous place but it’s not like a scene from Escape From New York or Mad Max. Being street smart is vital if you come from a Quentin Tarantino film but in modern day Australia you can be forgiven for focusing more on fun than being paranoid by every side glance or pedestrian bump. Just exercise common sense and refrain from venturing to deep into the alleyway when you need to relieve yourself.
