When you head out clubbing for the first time, it can be the most exciting time of your life, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
Going clubbing on your 18th birthday has become a rite of passage. Even schoolies celebrations come in second place compared to the clubs. The thrills of clubbing are unbeatable, from the music blasting through your ears to the alcohol running through your veins. But, there are so many things to be cautious of at the same time.
On your first night out, you can easily be taken for granted by fellow clubbers and even the club workers. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be attacked, that doesn’t usually happen in the clubs. It’s more of the fact that you will be overcharged for certain things, or you will end up in a random person’s bed.
On the Gold Coast, before you head out clubbing, it is a must that you sign up for the online guest lists, unless you have a VIP card for each club. Being on the guest list at least gets you free entry and some VIP benefits. In addition, you can also sign up to collect your VIP card on that night too. On the other hand, if you have a large group you can call up and say, “I have a party group of 10+ coming tonight for my birthday. Are there any group benefits?” In some cases you can get a free party package or a fishbowl. Honestly who doesn’t like free stuff?
If you don’t sign up for the guest list and you don’t have a VIP card, then you can be charged quite expensive cover charges from $20. This usually becomes a problem for newbies to the clubs, because they don’t sign up for the guest list and end up spending more on entry than on their drinks.
A lack of clubbing experience also makes them vulnerable to paying high prices for alcoholic beverages. Usually, a basic should cost no more than $4.50. But at full price they are around $9. So whilst one clubber might have gained free entry and bought 4 basics at $18, another has paid a $20 cover charge and paid $36 for 4 basics. In the end, the night can become quite expensive.
Although assaults rarely ever happen, it is best to be cautious of how much you drink too. It may not be you who is aggressive or argumentative, but some angry drunks can see everyone as an enemy when they have had too much. As for one night stands, it is best to be careful on your first few nights out, because some guys and girls can see you as a young, drunk, easy target. Even so, you should have a slightly sober mate to keep an eye on everyone, and stay in the clubs rather than on the streets. Although, I have never heard any bad clubbing stories yet.
Finally, make sure to have fun and forget your troubles for a night. Bust out some killer dance moves and show everyone that it’s your birthday.
