In more simple times, you didn’t need special effects, 3D glasses or overly-complicated storylines to make a great movie…all you needed was a great party.
Some of the most memorable movies that have stuck with viewers over the years are about parties they wish they had been to: high school parties, college parties, house parties, birthday parties and bachelor parties. There’s a ‘party movie’ for every occasion and generation. Here are some of the best of movie parties of all time.
Van Wilder: Party Liason. If we learned anything from Van Wilder, it’s that throwing an awesome party is a talent – write that down. Wilder has been at college for the better part of a decade, but when his father refuses to keep paying his tuition Van is forced to turn party-planning into a profession. This movie has everything from a ’70s theme roller rink party to a cross-dressing pyjama party, Jewish chair dancing and glow sticks.
Project X. Quite possibly the biggest movie party in history, Project X answers the question: ‘What’s the worst that can happen if a teenager throws a party while their parents are away?’ This makes Corey Worthington’s infamous house party look lame. Cars fly into pools, fires are started, pills are popped and the neighbours get angry. There’s nothing that this party does not have, except maybe a donkey…
Bachelor Party. I’m fairly certain this is the one and only movie party with a cocaine-snorting donkey – what else could you need? Tom Hanks is at his comic best here as the bachelor whose impending wedding means one thing to all his mates: one final wild party as a free man. What they wanted was a bachelor party with “chicks and guns and fire trucks and hookers!” What they got was plenty more the what they bargained for. It’s worth a viewing for the ’80s hair alone.
Superbad. This movie demonstrated that house parties are the perfect place to get laid; after all, if McLovin can pick up at a house party, so can you. It also reminds us that keeping the drinks flowing is essential to a successful party - although I should mention that I do not condone underage drinking, which always ends in embarrassment.
Weird Science. What should the average house party involve according to ’80s classic Weird Science? Chips, dips, chains, whips, of course! With the help of a fantasy woman they created out of thin air, teenage losers Wyatt and Gary make a name for themselves when they throw a killer house party and confront a few dreaded party crashers. And the best part is that they don’t even need to deal with the clean up before their parents get home, thanks to a bit of magic.
