Due to the recent (what, you mean they were still together?) breakup of Chumbawamba – the band who’s one-hit wonder, Tubthumbing, had everyone singing the lyrics “I get knocked down but I get up again” and “pissing the night away” - we’ve decided to create a list of one hit wonders who will stay in our hearts forever.
1. Vanilla Ice
Despite his anger management issues and love for wearing headgear sideways, nobody can help themselves from rapping along when they hear the words “stop, collaborate and listen, Ice is back with a brand new invention”. Released on his debut album, in 1989, this song really has stood the test of time. And you’ve got it stuck in your head now don’t you…ice, ice baby…
2. Right Said Fred
Who can forget British Trio Right Said Fred, singing “I’m too sexy for my shirt” as frontman, Richard Fairbrass, rubbed his hand down the front of his…well, shirt. The hit got to the top of the American music charts in 1992 and stayed at number 2 on the British charts for a record 6 weeks; however, it will stay at the top of the one-hit wonder charts forever.
3. 4 Non-Blondes
These 4, very-non-blonde California rockers, took the world by storm with their in-your-face song, What’s Up, which may be better remembered by the chorus line of “what’s goin’ on” or the opening line “25 years and my life is still trying to get up that great big hill of hope.” This was the 4 Non-Blondes’ only hit song before lead singer Linda Perry decided to go solo, which didn’t happen to turn out that great for her, but she doesn’t have anything to worry about because we’re still humming along to this tune.
4. Bobby McFerrin
Not only is Bobby McFerrin’s chirpy track Don’t Worry, Be Happy a legendary one-hit wonder, but it’s one of those tracks that just fills you with utter joy and happiness. Released in 1988, Don’t Worry, Be Happy was the first a cappella song to top the Billboard top 100. This song came from a quote by the Indian mystic Meher Baba, who used to say
“Do your best. Then, don’t worry; be happy in My love. I will help you“
To this day, this song helps put a smile on our face!
