We all like to hit the town, party, get on the piss, and occasionally get so drunk we either end up falling asleep in a nightclub bathroom or driving around for 2 hours in a taxi cause we’ve forgotten where we live; but there is a serious side to partying that we don’t tend to think about (physiologists like to call it denial…) Abusing alcohol or drugs, driving while under the influence and the dangers of drug-taking are things we don’t like to associate with having a good night out. In addition, drug and alcohol related injuries and deaths are not something we ever think will happen to us or those around us - but it can happen and it does.
Ever heard of SAM? No, he’s not your mate’s mate whom you hooked up with once at that party when you were both pissed and ended up in the closet together. SAM - or the Save-a-Mate program, is a Red Cross initiative that helps party-goers to have a good, safe, night out. Their aim is to educate youngsters in “health education and harm reduction”. This means you can still go out and enjoy yourself, but will know what situations lead to trouble, and what to do in the event of an emergency when time is paramount. SAM also provides education workshops, alcohol and drug specific first aid courses and volunteer opportunities for those who want to get involved.
SAM volunteers are young people themselves who enjoy celebrating but are keen to promote a culture and awareness of “safe partying, looking after your mates and knowing what to do in an emergency”. These volunteers attend festivals all over Australia, helping patrons to party safely, handing out sunscreen, providing first aid and a “chill-out space” for those in need of support or a safe environment. Their tips for enjoying a safe, fun, festival experience are:
1. Drink lots of water to stay hydrated
2. Eat proper meals
3. Take regular rest stops
4. Make sure a friend affected by drugs or alcohol always has somebody with them until help arrives
5. Agree on a meeting place when you want to go home and have a plan for getting there
