R&B legends Bell Div DeVoe and Ginuwine will be heading to Australia for the very first time later this year, ready to make you feel like you’ve gone back to the early ’90s all over again, without the shoulder pads and ridiculous haircuts.
For the uninitiated, the members of Bell Div DeVoe were originally part of ’80s R&B group New Edition until its lead singer Bobby Brown left to pursue a solo career (he’s more famous at the moment for being blamed for getting Whitney Houston onto drugs, leading to her recent death). Fortunately, the other members of New Edition formed Bell Div DeVoe and became successful in their own right with their debut album Poison in 1990.
Ginuwine is of the same cloth as Bell Div DeVoe, being a R&B artist at his peak in the ’90s. Best known for his hit ‘Pony’ and a cover version of the Prince classic ‘When Doves Cry’, Ginuwine has also collaborated with Diddy, Missy Elliott and Timbaland to name but a few. Though he will surely be playing his ’90s classics, he will no doubt play plenty of his new stuff from his latest album Elgin too.
Combining hip-hop, funk, soul, and pop music, Bell Div DeVoe and Ginuwine will surely get anyone lucky enough to be living in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane to enjoys old skool hits from the golden age of R&B before it was ruined by the likes of the Black Eyed Peas and Kanye West. Think back to the days of MC Hammer and Boyz II Men, when guys wore big gold chains or clocks around their necks, wore baggy parachute pants, and had the hi-top fade hairdo that could be what was to African Americans in the ’80s and ’90s what the mullet was to white people in that era. In a word: awesomeness.
