Pubs in NSW have banned the sale of alcohol in ‘mini buckets’ after the Scary Canary in Surry Hills was caught recklessly selling the drinks.
Police found that the Surry Hills staff were pouring excessive amounts of alcohol into the buckets without using measurements as per regulations. Using video footage, Police discovered that the alcohol content in each bucket often exceeded the two shot standard as was advertised.
Not only that, but the Pub also served high energy and soft drinks without the use of a measure. NSW Hospitality Minister George Souris described the findings as a ‘disturbing practice’ and ordered the behaviour be stopped immediately. Any Pub in NSW that continues to serve alcohol in mini buckets will now face fines of up to $5,500.
While most patrons would gladly accept a mini bucket that contained more alcohol than they paid for, it is a good thing that the Police cottoned on to the negligence of Canary staff. By serving unmeasured amounts of alcohol when common and legal practice deems them to be measured, patrons risk ingesting more alcohol they realise. For most full licensed drivers it is safe to drive after one drink consumed an hour or more before driving. If that drink were filled with more than one standard drink however, driving would not be safe at all.
The sale of alcohol in mini buckets was somewhat of a Scary Canary novelty but so far it remains a legal practice in all other states across Australia.
