The Saint Hotel Review

Review by Kyla Woods

Considered a deliciously harmonious mixture of heaven and hell, The Saint Hotel provides a perfect sanctuary for those inspiring to unleash their inner sinner and saint. You don’t have to entertain the notion of judgment day to gain entry; all you need is valid ID and appropriate attire.

The Saint Hotel, located on Fitzroy Street in St Kilda, has the ambience which encompasses both the Edwardian and Victorian eras – a former bank vault, intricate ornamental carvings surround the entry, alluding to a complete absence of the wonders that lay inside.

This venue, upon the transformation, kept the various compartments that were forged at the turn of the century – scattered throughout the hotel, these areas bestow a blessed privacy to patrons; simplicity is the essence of this establishment, keeping furnishings to a minimum. The contemporary décor is laced with leather stools, grandiose windows line the walls and high ceilings aerate the venue. Another quaint feature is the gates of hell which can be seen burning in the backroom, also known as a fire place.

Open primarily from Wednesday to Sunday, a variety of events are held to cater to a wide assortment of customers – Wednesday evenings are host to an All You Can Eat Mediterranean BBQ, enjoyed in the oriental styled courtyard – usually hosting a mixture of travelers and locals, each enjoys the extremely low prices of basic spirits ($6) and bottled beers ($5). The varied company is a warm welcome for those new to the neighborhood. The Mediterranean BBQ usually kicks on from Friday to Sunday regardless of the weather.

Friday to Sunday evenings brings ‘the next coming’ into a whole new perspective, with resident DJs spinning the dance floor into a frenzy with the freshest tunes. Friday nights offer a range of gourmet pizzas and basics for $5 and Saturday presents one of the biggest nights in Melbourne, inundated with sinners and saints – becoming a central hub for the crème de la crème of Melbourne society; Angelique beauties surround the bar and devilish cocktails to satanic beers flow from the depths of the bar, anointing entrants to a heavenly serenity.

Sunday Mass follows the events of Saturday, allowing all that sin a chance at redemption. Entry fees occasionally grace the doors of The Saint on a Saturday and Sunday, however, don’t be fooled into thinking twice, it’s $10, essentially compensating for the continuation of drink specials that the chosen one dishes out.

All in all, The Saint Hotel has a perpetual gravitational pull that has stood the tests of time – recommended for all to enjoy, these realms are ideal for the newly transcended and those still discovering their neighborhood. Word of caution, the weekends are subject to an influx of souls, so be sure to get in early!
